Heavy work activities!

Is your child a sensory seeker? A sensory seeker may look like:

➡️High energy level

➡️Difficulty sitting still

➡️Frequently touching people or things

➡️ Jumping, crashing, or spinning

➡️Talking fast/loud

If your child is a sensory seeker, they may benefit from ‘heavy work’ activities. Heavy work activities provide proprioceptive input through the muscles and joints. Proprioceptive input can provide a lasting, calming effect to our nervous system. Below are some heavy work activities you can incorporate into your daily routine!

✨Pushing/pulling on heavy boxes: Make it fun by loading up a laundry basket or toy truck with cans/books and pushing them across the room

✨Trampolines: Jumping on a trampoline can provide great proprioceptive input through all joints

✨Wall pushes: Make it fun by allowing your child to “hold up the wall” to keep it from falling

✨Bear Crawls: Pretend to be a bear and crawl around the room

✨Couch Sandwich: Place your child between two pillow cushions and create a silly “sandwich” while you are pushing on the top cushion

✨Weighted blanket: Weighted blankets should be 5% of your child’s body weight to ensure a positive effect and not too much pressure

... Read moreI know how overwhelming it can feel when you're navigating the energetic world of a sensory seeker. That's why I've found diving deeper into heavy work activities truly makes a difference! Beyond the fantastic ideas already shared, let's explore how to really weave these powerful tools into your family's daily rhythm for lasting calm and improved focus. The magic behind 'heavy work' lies in proprioceptive input—essentially, the signals our muscles and joints send to our brain about our body's position and movement. For sensory seekers, this input acts like a calming anchor, helping to organize their nervous system. Think of it as a natural way to help them feel more 'grounded' and in control, which is often what they crave most. Making Heavy Work a Daily Habit: Tips I've Learned: I've learned that consistency is key. It's not just about doing an activity once; it's about building it into routines. Start the Day Strong: Before a busy school day, a quick session of 'Wall pushes' against a sturdy surface can be a fantastic way to wake up muscles and prepare for focusing. Or, try a fun 'Bear Crawl' race down the hallway to get those initial wiggles out. Smooth Transitions: Moving from one activity to another can be tough. Incorporate heavy work as a bridge! Ask your child to help 'Pushing heavy boxes' (filled with toys or laundry) from the play area to their room. It's purposeful movement that helps them regulate. Calm Down Strategies: When things get overstimulating, having a designated spot with a 'Weighted Blanket' can be incredibly comforting. Remember, the general guideline is 5% of their body weight for safety and effectiveness. The 'Couch Sandwich' is another brilliant one for those moments when deep pressure is needed – it's often a favorite for its playful nature! Active Playtime: Make play count! Suggest jumping on a 'Trampoline' for a few minutes. You can also create simple obstacle courses that involve crawling under blankets or pushing pillows. Expanding Your Heavy Work Toolkit: More Ideas to Explore: While the core activities are amazing, expanding your repertoire can keep things fresh and engaging. Outdoor Adventures: Digging in a sandbox, helping push a toy lawnmower, or even carrying a small bucket of water for plants are great natural heavy work experiences. Helping Hands in the House: Carrying grocery bags, stirring thick dough in the kitchen, pushing a vacuum cleaner, or helping move cushions around are practical tasks that offer immense proprioceptive benefits. Creative Play: Playdough, clay, or even just squishing stress balls can provide wonderful hand and arm input. My Top Tips for Maximizing Benefits: Observe & Adapt: Every child is unique. What brings calm to one might not work for another. Pay attention to your child's cues and adjust activities accordingly. Keep it Playful: The more fun it is, the more they'll want to participate! Turn tasks into games, use silly voices, or make up stories. Short & Sweet: You don't need long, elaborate sessions. Short bursts of heavy work throughout the day can be incredibly effective. A few minutes on the 'Trampoline' or a quick 'Bear Crawl' can often reset their system. Prioritize Safety: Always supervise, especially with activities like trampolines or when using weighted items. Ensure the environment is safe and suitable for the activity. By incorporating these heavy work activities and approaches, I've seen firsthand how children can gain better body awareness, improve their focus, and achieve a greater sense of calm. It's a journey, but a deeply rewarding one for both of you!
