Commonality != Normalcy

Psychology, calls this the 'normalization of burnout' (or stress). When a struggle becomes a collective experience, we stop looking for a cure and start looking for company.

Company is great for empathy, but it’s terrible for progress. Your individual nervous system doesn't care that 'everyone is tired'—it just knows it needs peace. 🕊️

... Read moreIn today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that just because many people are experiencing burnout or chronic stress, it’s somehow an acceptable or unavoidable norm. This idea is what psychologists refer to as the 'normalization of burnout.' From my personal experience, I noticed that when burnout was treated as a shared struggle among my peers, we began to accept it rather than seek effective ways to address it. This collective acceptance created a false sense of comfort—knowing others are also exhausted felt empathetic but ultimately unproductive. What I realized is that acknowledging widespread burnout should not stop us from finding solutions. Your nervous system doesn’t find solace in the fact that 'everyone is tired'; it seeks tangible peace and rest. I started prioritizing small, consistent self-care habits—like mindful breathing, setting boundaries around work, and regular breaks—that helped reduce stress on a personal level even while the larger environment remained demanding. Moreover, the presence of company during tough times can be a double-edged sword. While having community support is crucial for emotional validation, it should not replace the pursuit of individual strategies for recovery and growth. Progress happens when we move beyond shared suffering and actively implement changes tailored to our own needs. Practical tips that helped me included identifying stress triggers specific to my lifestyle, seeking professional mental health support when needed, and engaging in activities that nurtured calmness and creativity. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle where burnout feels like the collective 'new normal,' remember it’s okay—and necessary—to prioritize your peace over merely sharing the burden. In summary, don’t let commonality of experience equate to acceptance of burnout as normal. Recognizing this distinction is the first step toward reclaiming your mental health and fostering meaningful progress in your life.
