Why does adenosine need to provide a double syringe technique? 📚

Why does adenosine have to give the double syringe technique 📚

💊 1.What is Adenosine?

• It is a drug used to stop or slow abnormal fast heartbeat (SVT).

• Action at AV node slows down conduction temporarily → cardiac arrest for a split second and then resume normal rhythm.

⚡ 2. Special properties of Adenosine drugs

It's 10 to 30 seconds fast, and it's broken down for about 10 seconds 👉, so it's "very fast" and "get into the heart as quickly as possible."

_ _ _ _ _

💉 3. Why use "Double Syringe Technique"?

Because we have to "push the medicine to the heart before the body breaks it all down."

If given slowly → the drug will be exhausted before reaching the heart → not effective ❌

🔹 Principle of Double Syringe Technique

Use a 3-way stopcock between 2 syringes.

Equipment

• Syringe 1: Adenosine (6 mg or 12 mg)

• Syringe 2: Enter Normal saline 10-20 mL

• Connect to the IV line located near the antecubital vein (inner arm).

🔹 How to give drugs

1.Turn on the stopcock to match the syringe containing the drug.

→ Quick injection of Adenosine within 1-2 seconds

2.As soon as the injection runs out, turn the stopcock and push the saline against immediately.

→ To "chase the drug into the heart as fast as possible."

3. Continuous monitoring ECG

⚕️ 4. Why not give way to drip or slow injection?

Because the active drug is too short - if given slowly, it will be broken down before reaching the heart → it will not work at all.

💡 The use of Double syringe technique is therefore the "standard" of Adenosine administration in emergencies.

⚠️ 5. Caution

• Continuous ECG monitoring required

• Temporary side symptoms such as blushing, chest tightness, breathing congestion may occur.

• Do not use in severe asthma or COPD patients because they may trigger bronchospasm.
