Booktok books I hated & why!

Let’s give this a shot! I love booktok and I think it’s a great place to be involved in to find other people who like to read as well as to find new books

but….

I find some of the books I’ve found through book tok to be so overhyped and here are some of them! Tell me if you think the same or what books you would add!!

... Read moreOkay, so we've all been there, right? Scrolling through BookTok, seeing a book everywhere, and thinking, 'This HAS to be good!' Especially when you hear about titles like 'Haunting Adeline' popping up from what feels like everywhere, including discussions that often link back to the dark romance trends on platforms like Wattpad. There's a magnetic pull to these viral reads, promising intense plots and unforgettable characters. But my personal experience with 'Haunting Adeline' by H.D. Carlton was... well, let's just say it was less 'hauntingly good' and more 'hauntingly problematic.' While BookTok loves to hype up its 'dark romance' elements, I found myself genuinely struggling with the content. The OCR mentioned 'glorifying assault and stalking,' and I couldn't agree more. For me, there's a fine line between a dark, edgy plot and one that normalizes genuinely harmful behaviors. The writing style, too, felt like it leaned into sensationalism without truly exploring the psychological depth required for such heavy themes. I went in hoping for a complex, morally gray romance, but what I got felt more like a questionable narrative that often left me feeling uncomfortable rather than entertained or intrigued. It really made me question the kind of narratives that gain immense traction in certain corners of BookTok and Wattpad. This isn't to say all dark romance is bad, or that BookTok only promotes problematic books. Far from it! It’s an incredible community. However, my journey with some of these 'must-read' titles, especially those that echo the more intense, often unedited styles found on platforms like Wattpad, has taught me to be a bit more discerning. There's a certain raw, unfiltered appeal to stories originating or flourishing in those spaces, but sometimes that comes at the cost of careful character development or thoughtful exploration of sensitive topics. When a book like 'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides, which I also tried, felt slow-paced despite a clever twist, it highlighted how different my reading preferences were from the viral hype. And even 'Throne of Glass' by Sarah J. Maas, while a beloved fantasy series, felt like a slow burn when I was expecting something more action-packed, as the OCR noted. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? How do we navigate the sheer volume of recommendations and find those hidden gems that truly resonate with our personal tastes, rather than just following the crowd? For me, it's about looking beyond the instant gratification of a 'spicy' tag and seeking out narratives that demonstrate real craft, even if they're dark. If you're like me and sometimes feel let down by the BookTok giants, maybe it’s time to share your own unpopular opinions! What books did you try because of the hype, only to find yourself wondering what everyone else was raving about? I'd love to hear your thoughts and discover some genuinely great reads that live up to their promise, rather than just their viral status.
