Spirituality gets tangled up in performance way too easily. Somewhere along the line, inner awareness got confused with outer aesthetics. Groups, rituals, crystals, titles, labels, none of those are prerequisites for consciousness. They’re tools, at best. Mistaking the tools for the work is where things go sideways.
Being spiritual is fundamentally a state of mind, not a lifestyle brand. It’s how you perceive reality, how you respond instead of react, how aware you are of your thoughts, motives, wounds, and projections. A person can sit in silence, never touch a crystal, never chant a mantra, and still be deeply spiritual if they're self-aware, emotionally honest, and capable of observing their own inner world without flinching.
Rituals were never meant to be obligations. Historically, they existed to help the mind enter a different state, focus, presence, reverence, clarity. When the ritual becomes compulsory or performative, it loses its power. Lighting incense doesn’t make someone conscious. Wearing crystals doesn’t raise awareness. Posting spiritual quotes doesn’t equal integration. If anything, over-ritualization can become a way to avoid the real work (spiritual bypassing), facing one’s shadow, questioning beliefs, dismantling ego narratives, and taking responsibility for one’s inner reactions.
True spirituality shows up in very unglamorous places. It’s in how someone handles conflict without needing to dominate. It’s in recognizing emotional triggers and tracing them back to unresolved patterns instead of blaming the outside world. It’s in being able to sit with discomfort without immediately numbing it, spiritualizing it, or outsourcing it to another ceremony. There’s also a quiet irony here: the most conscious people throughout history often lived simply. They didn’t advertise enlightenment. They didn’t recruit followers. They weren’t obsessed with being seen as spiritual. They were attentive, inwardly disciplined, and deeply aware of how the mind constructs meaning. Spirituality, at its core, is about perception, not participation.
Another overlooked point is that spirituality doesn’t require belief, it requires observation. You don’t have to subscribe to a doctrine, join a movement, or accept metaphysical explanations. You just need to be willing to watch your thoughts, notice your emotional patterns, question your conditioning, and recognize that you're not your impulses. That alone puts someone miles ahead of performative spirituality.
Crystals, rituals, groups, and practices can be supportive if they point you back inward. But the moment someone thinks they're spiritual because of those things, the center of gravity has already shifted outward. And once spirituality becomes something you do instead of something you are aware of, it risks becoming another identity costume for the ego to wear.
At its cleanest, spirituality is simple, awareness of self, awareness of thought, awareness of emotion, and awareness of how you relate to reality. Everything else is optional.
