How I started running as a fat girl!

#lemon8diarychallenge

It doesn’t matter who you are, you can run! I started off with walking a mile everyday to get my body used to it. I was ashamed of running at first because I am slow and big but now I love my runs!! I used to run on my own but now use a 12.5lb weighted vest and it has helped me a lot!

🌸Reminders: 🌸

🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️ running for you can look different for others, do NOT compare yourself and your progress to other people!

🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️ you don’t need expensive shoes, I bought some new balances on sale on amazon, you don’t need the fanciest and cutest shoes

🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️ no matter how slow you run, you are faster than not doing anything at all

🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️ don’t be upset if you need to walk but also make sure you’re pushing yourself, and don’t give up!

... Read moreIt's incredible how much my running journey has transformed not just my body, but my mind too. When I first thought about running, the idea of being a 'fat girl running' felt really daunting. I worried about what others would think, or if I'd even be able to go a block without stopping. But what I've learned is that running is truly for *everyone*, regardless of your starting point or body type. My biggest takeaway? Don't let shame or comparison hold you back from discovering what your body can do. You are faster than not doing anything at all! Beyond just walking a mile, my secret was consistency and being kind to myself. I started with a walk-run method, doing short bursts of running (like 30 seconds) followed by longer walks (2-3 minutes). Gradually, I'd increase the running intervals as my stamina improved. This made it feel achievable, not like I was instantly trying to run a marathon. For those days I wasn't feeling it, I'd remind myself of the advice I live by: 'start slow, not be ashamed to walk, and push yourself with checkpoints.' It's about progress, not perfection. One of the biggest motivators for me has been tracking my progress. I absolutely love looking at my Apple Watch workout summary. Seeing those numbers, like my 12'50" average pace over 1.01 miles when I first started, or later hitting 1.51 miles in 0:20:35 with a 13'36"/MI average pace, is so rewarding. It's not about being the fastest, but seeing my own improvement. I know some of you might use MapMyRun, and getting that workout summary can be just as inspiring. It shows you how far you've come, even on days when it feels tough. It’s like a little pat on the back for all your hard work, and proof that your effort is paying off. I also had to actively challenge the 'fat girl running meme' or the notion that 'fat ladies running' aren't serious athletes. Every step I take is a step towards my own health and happiness, regardless of size. My journey isn't about fitting a certain mold; it's about feeling strong and capable. If you're a plus-size woman starting to run, remember that your body is capable of amazing things. Don't let external perceptions dictate your journey. Embrace yourself, just like I do when I take a post-run selfie – proud and sweaty! Speaking of gear, while I mentioned you don't need expensive shoes, investing in a good, supportive sports bra is non-negotiable! Comfort is key. Also, stay hydrated! I always carry water, especially for longer runs. Don't forget a proper warm-up before you start and a cool-down afterwards to prevent injuries. These small things make a huge difference in how you feel during and after your run. And if you're curious about adding intensity, my 12.5lb weighted vest has been a game-changer, but always listen to your body and introduce new things gradually. Remember, every run, no matter the speed or distance, is a win. Whether you're aiming for your first mile or working towards a new personal best, celebrate every checkpoint. This is your journey, and it's a powerful one.
