Codependency Taught Me to Abandon Myself

For a long time, I confused being needed with being loved.

I thought love meant overextending myself. Fixing people. Saving relationships. Anticipating everyone else’s emotional needs before they even spoke them out loud.

I became so focused on keeping other people comfortable that I stopped asking myself whether I was comfortable too.

And honestly, codependency can feel noble at first.

It can look like loyalty.Like selflessness.Like being the “strong one.”Like always showing up no matter how drained you are.

But eventually, I realized something painful:

I was disappearing inside relationships while calling it love.

I was afraid that boundaries would make people leave. Afraid that saying no would make me difficult. Afraid that choosing myself would make me selfish.

So I kept giving.Kept shrinking.Kept over-functioning.Kept trying to earn safety through usefulness.

But healthy love does not require me to abandon myself to keep someone else close.

Real love allows honesty. It allows boundaries. It allows individuality. It allows both people to exist fully without one person carrying the emotional weight of the entire relationship.

Healing from codependency has meant learning that I am allowed to matter too.

My needs matter. My rest matters. My voice matters. My identity outside of helping others matters.

And maybe one of the hardest lessons has been realizing that boundaries are not rejection.

They are self-respect.They are emotional honesty. They are the bridge back to myself.

So now, I am learning how to love people without losing me in the process.

And honestly? That kind of healing changes everything.

... Read moreFor those of us who have struggled with codependency, the process of healing often feels like rediscovering a lost part of ourselves. I used to believe that being constantly available and fixing others' problems was a sign of love. It wasn’t until I learned that this pattern actually leads to losing my own identity that I began to change. Setting boundaries was one of the most challenging yet liberating steps. At first, I thought boundaries meant pushing people away or being perceived as selfish. However, I came to realize that boundaries are not walls but bridges that connect us to our true selves while still allowing us to maintain meaningful relationships. In the beginning, saying no felt uncomfortable because I feared rejection. But practicing emotional honesty taught me that my needs are valid and that relationships thrive when both people honor their individuality. This shift helped me stop overextending myself and start prioritizing my own rest and wellbeing. Moreover, understanding that boundaries teach others how to treat you was a critical revelation. By clearly communicating what I would and would not accept, I noticed a change in how others interacted with me. It wasn’t about controlling others but about respecting myself enough to demand the same. Healing from codependency is ongoing, and it requires patience and self-compassion. It involves recognizing that healthy love does not ask me to abandon myself, but rather encourages me to be authentic and whole. This journey transformed not just my relationships but my entire approach to self-care and personal growth. If you find yourself constantly giving but feeling empty, know that it’s okay to choose yourself first. Self-love and setting boundaries don’t make you less loving—they make you stronger and create space for deeper, more balanced connections.
