common signs of co-dependency (part 1)

in my experience, co-dependent behaviors slowly became more prevalent over time. day to day, it can be hard to notice changes but if you zoom out or look at yourself unbiasedly, it can help you see things for how they really are.

recognizing potential signs of co-dependency is crucial for maintaining well-being. it can lead to an unhealthy reliance on others for self-worth and identity, which can create emotional instability and low self-esteem.

in time, this imbalance can cause chronic stress, anxiety and / or depression. if you notice any of these signs are present in your life, you can take proactive steps to set healthier boundaries.

I am going to create a second post about behavior and relationship signs of co-dependency. this topic can be overwhelming so I wanted to break it up.

... Read moreIt's funny how easy it is to miss the subtle shifts when you're caught in the cycle of co-dependency. For a long time, I just thought I was being a 'good partner' or 'supportive friend,' but looking back, I can see how much of my energy was tied up in others, leading to my own well-being taking a backseat. It's truly an eye-opener when you start connecting the dots to what emotional dependency really looks like. One of the most challenging aspects for me was recognizing the psychological signs. I remember feeling a constant churn of guilt and anxiety whenever I tried to prioritize my own needs. Even small acts of self-care felt selfish, immediately followed by the worry that I was letting someone down. It's a heavy burden to carry, always anticipating and worrying about others' reactions to your choices. Then there was the denial. I'd rationalize my behaviors, telling myself everyone acts this way, or that my sacrifices were just part of being in a loving relationship. It took a lot of honest self-reflection to admit that I was often ignoring my own feelings and needs to maintain a false sense of peace. This, of course, led to neglecting self-care. My personal identity became so intertwined with caring for others that my own hobbies, rest, and even basic needs like healthy eating or exercise would fall by the wayside. I'd feel drained, but couldn't quite pinpoint why, because I genuinely believed I was doing 'the right thing.' Obsessive thinking also became a constant companion – constantly replaying conversations, worrying about what someone else was doing or feeling, trying to 'fix' their problems. It monopolized my mental space and left little room for my own thoughts or goals. Ultimately, this contributed to a real lack of personal identity. I wasn't sure who I was outside of my relationships. My opinions, dreams, and even my mood often mirrored those of the people I was close to. It was a scary realization to feel so lost within myself. On the emotional front, the desire to help and care for others crossed into excessive caregiving. I'd take on responsibilities that weren't mine, believing I was indispensable, and often feeling resentful when my efforts weren't appreciated. Underneath a lot of this was a deep fear of abandonment. The thought of someone leaving, or disapproving of me, was terrifying. This fear often drove my people-pleasing tendencies, making me agree to things I didn't want to do, just to keep the peace and avoid conflict. It was exhausting trying to manage everyone else's happiness, often at the expense of my own. This cycle, unfortunately, fed my low self-esteem. My sense of worth became entirely dependent on external validation – on how much I was needed or appreciated by others. When that validation wasn't there, I felt worthless. And perhaps one of the most challenging signs was difficulty identifying my own emotions. I was so attuned to others' feelings that my own became murky. Was I angry, or just reflecting someone else's frustration? It took practice to separate my emotional landscape from theirs. Recognizing these signs isn't about blaming yourself; it's about empowerment. It's the first courageous step towards reclaiming your autonomy and building healthier, more balanced relationships. For me, just being able to name these feelings was a huge relief and gave me the clarity I needed to start setting those much-needed boundaries. It's a journey, not a destination, but one absolutely worth taking for your well-being.
