Insecurity: postpartum body ❤️‍🩹

I wanted to make a #safespace post for the #lemon8challenge and this one hurts deep. My number one insecurity is my new body after having my child.

I am permanently stretched and marked. My skin is loose, I’ll never have a normal belly button again. My belly says over my pants and the stretch marks cover every inch between my thighs and chest. I feel as if I am used up and ugly.

I know, I know… I often preach about self love and accepting these marks. But it’s hard. Society wants me to hate it, it wants me to fix it. It wants me to erase these marks, and deep down, I would like to erase them too. I say things like, “I earned these marks”, and “each one tells a story”, but truthfully I find myself mourning my old body, and feeling envy over the women who give birth and bounce back with no stretch marks or other visible evidence of motherhood.

I want to love myself how I am, I want to love the changes made… but it’s hard when the media pushes so much self hatred and comparison. 💔

To all my mommas, hang in there. Stretch marks or no stretch marks you are worthy of love and you did a hard thing. I hope we can all accept these blessings. Bodies are meant to change.

... Read moreIt's truly brave to share such raw feelings about your postpartum belly and the struggle with mommy tummy insecurity. What you've described resonates with so many of us new mothers. That feeling of being "permanently stretched and marked," the loose skin, and a belly button that looks completely different – it's a profound shock to our body image, isn't it? It’s easy to feel isolated when you’re grappling with these changes. Society often bombards us with images of celebrity moms "bouncing back" in record time, creating an unrealistic standard that leaves many of us feeling inadequate. But the reality for most women is far different. Our bodies have just performed an incredible feat, creating and nurturing a whole human being. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and these physical changes are the badges of honor from that journey. When I first looked at my own postpartum belly, I remember a similar mix of emotions. There was this intense love for my baby, but also a deep sadness for the body I felt I’d lost. My "mommy tummy" felt alien. I'd stand in front of the mirror, poking at the loose skin and tracing the silvery lines of stretch marks, wondering if I'd ever feel comfortable in my own skin again. It's a powerful internal conflict, wanting to embrace the changes because they represent motherhood, but simultaneously yearning for a return to what was familiar. One of the most helpful things I learned was to shift my focus from "fixing" my postpartum belly to "caring" for it. Instead of seeing my body as something broken that needed repair, I started viewing it as something that had worked incredibly hard and deserved gentle attention. This meant things like choosing comfortable clothes that made me feel good, rather than trying to squeeze into old sizes. It also meant finding small ways to move my body that felt nourishing, not punitive. Simple walks, gentle stretching, or even just dancing around the living room with my baby helped me reconnect with my body in a positive way. Hydration and nutrition also play a quiet but significant role. While they won't "erase" stretch marks or instantly tighten loose skin, they support overall skin health and healing. Staying well-hydrated can improve skin elasticity over time, and a nutrient-rich diet provides the building blocks for tissue repair. It's also crucial to curate your social media feed. Unfollow accounts that trigger comparison and self-doubt. Instead, seek out those that promote body neutrality or positivity, especially from other real moms sharing their authentic postpartum journeys. Seeing diverse body types and honest conversations about the "mommy tummy" can be incredibly validating. Finally, allowing yourself grace is key. Some days you might feel more accepting, and other days the insecurity might creep back in. That's perfectly normal. This journey of body acceptance after childbirth is ongoing. Celebrate the small victories, like feeling confident enough to wear a swimsuit or simply appreciating your strength. Your body is amazing, not despite these changes, but because of what it has accomplished. Keep talking about it, keep sharing, because in creating these safe spaces, we remind each other that we are truly not alone.
