Tantrum tips ๐Ÿค

Hey moms and dads ๐Ÿ’— here are some silly reasons my toddler (almost 2 years old!) threw tantrums recently. I just find them comical!

Itโ€™s very easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated when our children are throwing a fit, especially when itโ€™s over something we think is, well, dumb. I find it hard not to overreact from being overstimulated (which always makes it worse).

If youโ€™re like me and you need some help dealing with the crazy tantrums, here are some tips I have:

๐Ÿค take a few deep breaths (bonus points if you get your child to do it too!). In through the nose, out through the mouth. This will help calm your nervous system.

๐Ÿค wear earplugs to help with sound overstimulation. Or AirPods. Those work too.

๐Ÿค set firm boundaries and stick to them. If you tell them one more book, stick to it. If you tell them one more slide, stick to it. If you tell them no, stick to it. This will solidify that you mean what you say and they can rely on you.

๐Ÿค donโ€™t expect a tantruming toddler to listen to reason. They just donโ€™t, they canโ€™t. A meltdown is not the place for logic, it is the place for compassion and patience.

๐Ÿค realize that what seems small to you could be a very big deal to your toddler. This is their first time living too, and theyโ€™re much less experienced than you are.

๐Ÿค repeat this phrase: โ€œtheyโ€™re not giving me a hard time, theyโ€™re having a hard timeโ€. There is certainly a difference. They arenโ€™t meaning to make things difficult for you; they themselves are struggling.

Everyone please remember that gentle parenting is not permissive parenting. You can set firm boundaries, discipline when necessary, and raise exceptional human beings with gentle parenting. Donโ€™t let them walk on you, but also donโ€™t harm them emotionally or physically. You can be a firm and authoritative gentle parent. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’—

Friendly reminder: youโ€™re doing great.

... Read moreTantrums are a common aspect of toddler behavior, often causing stress for parents. Understanding that a toddler's meltdown might seem trivial to adults, but can hold significant weight for the child is key. Recent insights highlight multiple reasons toddlers express frustrationโ€”common situations like not being allowed to play in certain ways or miscommunication about simple requests can lead to overwhelming emotions. Addressing tantrums effectively requires not only patience but also a clear strategy. For instance, distracting the child with an alternative activity can often mitigate the immediate emotional outburst. Integrating elements of gentle parenting, where the emphasis is on emotional validation rather than punishment, can foster a more profound understanding of parenting dynamics. Remember, the goal is to teach emotional regulation; even adults struggle with this at times. In summary, when dealing with tantrums, approach the situation with empathy and mindfulness. By reinforcing clear boundaries and maintaining your composure, parents can transform tantrum episodes into learning experiences for their children. Remember, youโ€™re embedding valuable life skills in your little ones while managing their feelings.
