TANTRUM vs MELTDOWN 💥

Hey y’all! My daughter had her first real meltdown last night, and it was a scary & confusing time. Let me tell you about it and what I learned!

We had just gotten her out of the bath and sat her down to get dressed when she began to cry and “throw a fit” - squirming on the bed, kicking, whining. We figured she was just unhappy to get out of the bath, but one thing was odd: she was getting more and more intense. Nothing we did calmed her down, and at first we were annoyed, but soon realized this was NOT your typical tantrum. This was a meltdown. Nothing we did could help her calm down. Not bluey, no pretzels (favorite snack), no boobie (she still nurses). Nothing that usually works, worked. The more we tried to calm her, the worse it got. We decided to give her some space and say her in her crib for about 15 minutes and sat on the other side of the room so she knew we were near, but also had space. She screamed and kicked the whole time, even pulled her hair. There was nothing we could do to help, it would get worse with every intervention. After the 15 minutes, she started to calm down. She asked for hugs and boobie, and she eventually calmed all the way down, back into her normal happy self. The meltdown had me feeling scared and sad: I wondered if something was genuinely wrong, and I felt bad for her because she was having such a hard time.

Here’s what I learned:

TANTRUMS:

- usually a form of protest

- at the will of the child

- slows down and stops with self regulation

MELTDOWNS:

- due to overstimulation / emotion processing

- out of the child’s control completely

- is beyond self regulation ; child cannot help it

- only slows when child wears themself out, is removed from overstimulating environment, or is successfully calmed by parent (not easy to do; logic is not accepted during a meltdown)

Both tantrums and meltdowns are completely normal parts of toddler development. Once I realized my daughter was having a meltdown, my top priorities were:

1. Keep her physically safe

2. Keep her mentally safe

All I wanted was to make sure she didn’t hurt herself and didn’t feel unsafe. I want her to know that she is safe with me and I understand. During a vulnerable time when she can’t help it, I want her to know that mommy and daddy are here for her. She was not punished by any means for the melt down, as no child should be punished for something out of their control. Our aim is to help our child feel safe and secure.

I hope this post helps you understand the difference, as I didn’t know the difference until it was up in my face last night!

... Read moreIt’s so tough when your little one is having a really hard time, and you feel helpless. Like Brandi mentioned, it’s crucial to understand the difference between a tantrum and a true meltdown. A tantrum might be your child protesting something they don't want, often with a clear goal in mind. But a meltdown, oh, that's a whole different ballgame – it's truly *out of the child's control*, often triggered by overwhelming emotions or sensory input. When your child is experiencing a meltdown, their brain is literally in 'fight or flight' mode, making logical reasoning impossible. One key thing I've learned, often through trial and error, is identifying triggers. For many toddlers, meltdowns can stem from overstimulation – too much noise, too many people, new environments, or even just being overtired or hungry. The OCR text also highlighted that a 'Meltdown = out of child's control,' which is so true. If you notice a pattern, try to proactively create a calmer environment or offer quiet breaks. For example, if bath time sometimes leads to overwhelm, maybe dim the lights, use calming essential oils (child-safe, of course!), or make it a shorter, less stimulating experience. Keeping a little log of when meltdowns occur can reveal significant patterns, like always happening before a nap or after a trip to a busy store. When a meltdown is in full swing, remember that your child isn't choosing this behavior; they're genuinely struggling. The OCR wisely states, 'There are different ways to deal with both of these events.' For meltdowns, my go-to strategy is creating a safe, low-stimulus space, similar to what Brandi did by putting her daughter in the crib with space. Sometimes, a 'sensory break' can be helpful – a quiet corner with a weighted blanket (supervised!), a few favorite soft toys, or even just sitting together without talking, offering a calm presence. Deep pressure like a firm hug (if accepted) can also be grounding for some children. The goal isn't to stop the tears immediately but to help regulate their nervous system. Avoid asking 'why' questions or trying to reason; their brain just isn't equipped for that in that moment. After the storm passes, which it eventually will, the most important step is reconnection. Offer comfort, a hug, and let them know you're there. Don't revisit the 'bad behavior' or punish them for something truly beyond their control. Instead, you can gently talk about what happened later, once everyone is calm. 'That was a really big feeling you had. It felt overwhelming, didn't it?' This helps them learn to name their emotions and understand that you're a safe harbor. We can also teach them simple calming techniques for next time, like deep breaths or squeezing a stress ball if they're old enough. Understanding these intense moments, whether they're classic tantrums or sensory-related meltdowns, empowers us as parents to respond with empathy and effective strategies, helping our little ones navigate their big feelings and grow. If you consistently find your child having extreme, unmanageable meltdowns, especially those that seem linked to specific sensory triggers or disrupt daily life significantly, it might be beneficial to chat with your pediatrician. They can offer further insights and guidance, ensuring your child gets any support they might need.
