Terrible twos… 😣

Hey all! Especially my fellow mamas, how do you deal with your toddler being a menace in public?! I know it’s totally normal for them to act like this and it’s developmentally appropriate, but does anyone have tips on how to mitigate this? Thanks in advance!

... Read moreOh, the infamous 'terrible twosday' – it's not just a phase, it feels like a daily battle, especially when you're out and about! I swear, one minute my little one is an angel, and the next, they're staging a full-blown protest in the middle of the cereal aisle. I vividly remember one particularly epic meltdown in a huge warehouse store. My toddler decided the shopping cart was a prison, not a ride, and went completely limp, right next to a towering display of Pampers diapers. It felt like every eye was on us, and all I wanted to do was disappear! It’s so reassuring to know I’m not alone in feeling this intense frustration. While we know it's developmentally normal for those tiny humans to test boundaries, it doesn't make navigating those public outbursts any easier. So, how do we, fellow parents, reclaim our sanity and make those necessary errands less terrifying? Here are a few strategies I've picked up, often through trial and error (and a lot of deep breaths!): 1. The Proactive Approach: Before You Leave the House Fuel Up & Rest Up: A hungry or tired toddler is a ticking time bomb. Always make sure they've had a snack and aren't overdue for a nap before venturing out. I always stash emergency snacks in my bag – those fruit pouches are lifesavers! Set Expectations: Even if you think they won't understand, talk to them about what's going to happen. "We're going to the grocery store, we'll get milk, and then we go home." Simple, direct, and gives them a heads-up. The Distraction Kit: Pack a small bag with a favorite toy, a new (small) book, or some stickers. Sometimes, a novel distraction is all it takes to avert a crisis in a shopping cart. Timing is Everything: If possible, avoid peak crowded times. A quieter store means fewer stimuli for your little one and less pressure for you. 2. In the Thick of It: Managing the Meltdown Stay Calm (Easier Said Than Done!): When your toddler is screaming in a public space, your instinct might be to react emotionally. Take a deep breath. Your calm presence can actually help de-escalate the situation faster than yelling or pleading. Acknowledge Their Feelings: "I see you're really upset right now because you want that toy." Validating their emotions, even if you can't give them what they want, can sometimes break through the tantrum. Offer Limited Choices: Instead of a direct "no," try, "You can't have the candy, but you can choose between a banana or an apple." This gives them a sense of control. Distraction Reloaded: Point out something interesting. "Look at that big truck outside!" or "Can you help me find the red apples?" Know When to Retreat: Sometimes, the best strategy is to simply leave. If the tantrum is in full swing and nothing is working, quietly pack up your goods (or abandon your shopping cart if necessary!) and head out. A time-out in the car or at home is often more effective than battling it out in the middle of a busy store. I've definitely left a full cart in a warehouse store more than once – my sanity was worth it! 3. The Aftermath & Moving Forward Don't Dwell: Once the storm passes, don't keep rehashing it. Focus on reconnecting and moving on. Praise Positive Behavior: When your toddler does behave well, even for a short period, acknowledge it! "I loved how you sat nicely in the shopping cart while we picked out apples." Consistency is Key: Routines and consistent responses help toddlers understand boundaries over time. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and every day is a learning experience. Sending so much solidarity to all the parents out there navigating these challenging, yet often hilarious, 'terrible twosday' moments. What are your go-to public tantrum survival tips?

I normally just ignore the behavior anyone that has kids right now will understand. I used to get incredibly embarrassed but the people that normally complain are the ones that have no kids or are old asf

Terrible Twos are Hard: When Does it get Easier?
We’re right in that 2.5–3-year-old stage right now… and wow, it’s a ride. Some days they’re the sweetest little humans — giving hugs, saying “I love you,” and wanting to help with everything. And then the next minute, there’s a full meltdown over the color of a cup or who gets to open the door.

Toddlers aren’t “terrible,” they’re learning how to navigate a world that’s overwhelming. Labeling them terrible only sets us up to see their natural development as a problem. Every meltdown, every “no,” every pushback is communication appropriate for their age. It’s testing limits, seeking indep

After terrible twos come horrible threes?
Let me start by saying that every age comes with its challenges AND with its beautiful moments. The age of 3 is incredibly important for your little one’s development for multiple reasons: At 3 years old, you can finally hear all the thoughts that have been running through their minds all this t
