Reason #12 Why I Love Homeschool

Libraries. Since my kiddos were babies we’ve been frequenting the library as regularly as we can, usually once a week. We are fortunate to live in a state with a library consortium. This means we can borrow and return books to different libraries in Connecticut. We love our local library, but have a few in our general area that have made their way into our weekly rounds. Sometimes we make a special trip to a library a bit farther away, which always feels like a special treat for us. We are a library loving family, so it’s no surprise that one of the biggest homeschooling perks for us is being able to visit the library during the day when it’s especially quiet. I find the library to be very much like a constant companion. It’s there to excite us when we are bored or comfort us when we are having a bad day. It keeps us company when we are lonely and encourages our imaginations when we are playful. Combing the aisles for books feels like being enveloped in a great big hug. It’s a friend we will always make time to visit - even if only for a quick stop to swap out a couple books. If you’re a homeschooling family, I’ve no doubt you’re a library regular. If you’re thinking about homeschooling, the library is waiting. Happy homeschooling!

... Read moreLibraries play an essential role in homeschooling by providing a wealth of resources beyond traditional textbooks. Many homeschool families find that regular trips to the library not only supply a steady stream of educational materials but also foster a love for reading and independent learning in children. The unique advantage of libraries in areas with consortiums — such as the one mentioned in Connecticut — is the ability to borrow from multiple branches, greatly expanding the variety of available books and resources without extra cost. Daytime library visits mean homeschoolers can enjoy calmer environments, perfect for focused reading and research, away from the typical school-day crowd. This quiet atmosphere encourages deeper engagement, stimulates curiosity, and supports diverse learning activities such as thematic reading, research projects, and creative inspiration through vast collections. Moreover, libraries often host workshops, story times, and educational events tailored to families and children, providing valuable social and community engagement opportunities for homeschoolers. These events can enhance a child’s social learning and introduce new interests. The sensory experience of walking through book aisles is often described as comforting and inspiring — it’s like a nurturing companion that fuels imagination and exploration. Regular library visits become a special routine that both children and parents look forward to, helping to establish a consistent and joyful learning habit. For families new to homeschooling, embracing library routines can be a game-changer. Not only do libraries reduce the financial burden of homeschooling resources, but they also offer access to audiobooks, digital lending, and multimedia materials that cater to various learning styles. This richness makes libraries a core pillar of flexible, engaging, and resourceful homeschooling. Ultimately, the library is more than just a building filled with books; it is a gateway to knowledge, creativity, and community—a trusted friend eager to support homeschooling journeys at every step.
