When My Tretinoin Routine Went Wrong ☹️🙁😞🥺😭
✨ WHEN MY TRETINOIN ROUTINE WENT WRONG ✨
Yesterday evening, I completed my Monday PM tretinoin sandwich routine:
🫧 ANUA Cleansing Oil
🫧 Etude SoonJung pH 6.5 Cleanser
🔴 RED-H + NIR LED — 10 minutes
🥛 TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner Light — 2 layers
💧 The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
🩷 BYOMA Moisturizer
🌙 Tretinoin 0.025%
🩷 BYOMA Moisturizer
📸 RIGHT AFTER MY ROUTINE:
My skin looked hydrated and relatively calm in the first photos. I only noticed mild cheek pinkness, no obvious hives, swelling, blistering or peeling.
Shortly afterward, however, I began feeling tingling and slight burning across both cheeks, underneath my bottom lip, along the top of my chin and near my upper forehead and hairline.
I tried cooling my face with my mini fan, but the sensation didn’t improve. That helped me recognize that it wasn’t simply temporary warmth from my LED session or moisturizer.
Even though my skin didn’t look severely irritated, it was clearly telling me that something wasn’t right.
🚿 WHAT I DID NEXT:
Instead of pushing through the discomfort, I washed the entire routine off.
I gently patted my skin dry with Viva paper towels and applied only the ANUA 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream.
After the first layer, the burning and tingling noticeably decreased. I still felt mild residual irritation and some tightness in my cheeks when moving my face, so I gave my skin time to settle.
I waited approximately 20–30 minutes before applying a second thin layer of the ANUA moisturizer.
That second layer was a game-changer!
My skin felt significantly more comfortable, with much less burning, tingling and tightness. About an hour later, it looked moisturized and settled, with only mild residual cheek pinkness and no obvious swelling, hives, blistering, crusting or active peeling.
🔎 WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED:
I cannot say that one product, or the tretinoin alone caused the reaction. It may have been the cumulative effect of several factors:
🔴 Completing a RED-H + NIR light therapy session
🥛 Applying two layers of hydrating toner
💧 Following with hyaluronic acid
🩷 Applying BYOMA moisturizer before tretinoin
⏳ Not waiting approximately 20–30 minutes between the first BYOMA layer and the tretinoin
My skin may have still been very hydrated and not fully settled when I applied the tretinoin. With my sensitive skin, that combination may have made the tretinoin feel more intense.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that any one of these products was the problem. Several individually tolerable steps may have created too much for my skin when used together without enough breathing room.
🤎 A PERSONAL SHOUTOUT TO ANUA:
I originally purchased the ANUA 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream because I was dealing with dehydrated skin. I expected moisture and barrier support, but I didn’t realize how valuable it would become during a moment like this.
Once the burning and tingling started, I washed everything off with water and applied only the ANUA moisturizer. The first layer noticeably reduced the discomfort, and the second thin layer was a complete game-changer for me.
What started as a moisturizer for dehydration became the product I reached for when my skin needed immediate comfort and simplicity.
A personal shoutout to ANUA, this moisturizer truly showed up for my skin when I needed it most! 🤎✨ @Anua Store US
💡 MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY:
How skin feels matters just as much as how it looks.
My skin appeared relatively calm, but the continuing burning and tingling told a different story. I didn’t need to wait for dramatic redness, peeling or swelling before taking action.
Burning is not something I need to tolerate to make tretinoin work. Sometimes the best skincare decision is knowing when to stop, wash everything off and return to a simple barrier-supporting routine.
⚠️ This is my personal skincare experience, not medical advice. Severe or worsening burning, facial swelling, widespread hives, blistering or difficulty breathing requires prompt medical attention.
Have you ever stopped and washed off a skincare active because your skin told you something wasn’t right?
