Communicating With Nonverbal Children!

💬Communication comes in many forms, and every child deserves a way to express themselves!

Whether it's through visual tools, sign language, or interactive play, these strategies can make a big difference. Let's bridge the gap and help our little ones feel heard! #autisticspectrumdisorder #autismawareness #nonverbal #autismparents

... Read moreAs a parent navigating the world of nonverbal communication, I know how heartbreaking and frustrating it can be when your child struggles to express themselves. Those moments of miscommunication or unmet needs can feel overwhelming for everyone involved. But I've learned that with the right tools and a bit of patience, we can really bridge that gap and help our children thrive. One of the most transformative tools for us has been the Picture Exchange Communication System, or PECS. It’s more than just showing pictures; it's a structured way for children to initiate communication. For example, when my child wants a specific toy, they hand me the 'toys PECS' icon. It’s incredibly empowering for them! We started with simple requests, like using a 'help PECS icon' when they needed assistance or a 'hungry boardmaker' picture when it was snack time. This really helps them express meaning for kids and reduces a lot of communication frustration. I've even seen icons for 'quiet mouth PECS,' which can be helpful for establishing expectations in certain settings. Using a 'tablet PECS icon' has also been a game-changer for screen time requests, making limits clearer. Beyond requests, understanding emotions is crucial. That's where 'I feel' communication boards come in. I remember those days when my little one would be upset, and I just couldn't figure out why. Creating an 'I feel boardmaker' setup for them, similar to the ones I've seen with pictures for happy, sad, mad, tired, hungry, sick, confused, and excited, changed everything. Now, they can point to 'boardmaker tired' when they need a nap, or 'boardmaker sad' if something has upset them. It's such a relief to have that visual cue, and it allows us to respond much more effectively to their needs. These boards are fantastic for children with nonverbal autism signs to communicate their internal states. Visual aids extend to everyday choices too, like the 'Choice Board' I use. It has icons for things like juice, snack, toilet, and outside. This gives my child agency and reduces meltdowns because they can clearly choose what they want. It’s amazing how much independence these simple picture cards offer. We've also explored basic sign language, and while it's a different approach, having a 'Basic Sign Language' chart has added another layer to our communication toolkit. The key is consistency and finding what resonates with your child. Whether it's a PECS system binder filled with dinosaurs, stickers, or robot cards, an 'I feel' board, or a simple cup picture, every step forward in communication is a victory. These strategies aren't just about reducing nonverbal communication challenges; they're about building connection, fostering understanding, and helping our children feel truly heard and valued. It’s a journey, but seeing them express meaning for kids clearly makes every effort worthwhile.
