5 Things I’m Teaching My Daughter As She Gets Older

Generations have gotten lazy as time goes on, so these are the five musts I do and want my daughter to do that will help her be a lady. When you look good you feel good. Tell me what yours are.

1. “You can always tell a lady by her hands” clean, moisturized, well kept, and polished hands make a world of difference. Trying to save money? Give yourself a manicure at home, but I definitely feel it’s a big part of hygiene to keep your hands nice.

2. Ladies, paint your toenails. If they are going to be seen in any capacity paint those things. Sandals without unpainted feet are a sin ‘round here.

3. Makeup, controversial I know. I will say a little goes a long way. Use it to enhance your beauty. My grandmother always used to tell me “you owe it to your public to look the best you can.” I always HATED hearing that growing up, but now that I’m an adult I couldn’t agree more.

4. No wrinkled clothing. Sometimes on those quick errands it’s so easy to go messy, but you are a billboard for yourself. You are how you represent yourself.

5. Do your hair. We all let our hair get oily from time to time and some people can’t help it, but do your best to keep clean, groomed, and done hair. No roots, dead ends, or styles that don’t flatter you.

You are worth so much. You owe these things to yourself. It’s a sign of self respect to treat yourself the best you can. You may think you’re “comfy how you are” and that’s great but I assure you when you look better you feel better and you do better. You deserve to look your best because you are amazing. #beauty #unfiltered #

... Read moreAs a mother, teaching my daughter these beauty habits has been about more than just appearance; it's about instilling self-respect and confidence that carry throughout life. I've noticed that when my daughter takes the time to care for her hands, feet, and hair, she feels empowered and carries herself differently — more poised and sure. I started by showing her how to do simple at-home manicures, emphasizing that neat, moisturized hands are often the first things people notice. It doesn’t require expensive salon visits, just a little dedication and the right tools. Similarly, painted toenails have become a fun little ritual — she loves picking out the colors herself. It’s a small way for her to express personality while feeling polished. Regarding makeup, we treat it as a way to enhance rather than mask natural beauty. I remember my grandmother’s words, "you owe it to your public to look your best," and though it felt strict before, it now resonates deeply. Teaching her moderation — using just a touch of makeup — helps build her skill to present herself confidently without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. Clothing also plays a huge role. We pay attention to keeping clothes wrinkle-free, clean, and flattering. It’s about respecting the way you present yourself, even on quick errands. It’s a lesson that her outward appearance reflects her attitude and how she values herself. Haircare is often overlooked, but it’s essential. Helping her keep her hair clean and styled in a way that suits her personality boosts her self-esteem. We avoid letting roots or dead ends accumulate and encourage hairstyles that frame her face pleasantly. This consistent care really affects how she feels throughout the day. Ultimately, teaching my daughter these routines isn’t about vanity. It’s about self-love and respect. When she looks good, she feels good, and that confidence inspires her to do better in every part of life. I encourage other parents to consider these simple but powerful habits as a gift to their children — a foundation for lifelong confidence and grace.
