Currently Reading: Black AF History

I have seen this book all over social media and decided to get my hands on it to see what it is all about. So far I have learned in this book history more in detail than what they have taught me in school. School taught me the overall picture, this book is teaching me the breakdown. So far, so good and I am on page 41

... Read moreI mentioned I'm currently diving into 'Black AF History' by Michael Harriot, and let me tell you, it's an experience! I'm only a few pages in, but it's already clear why this book is generating so much buzz and is truly a must-read for anyone wanting a genuine understanding of American history. It goes far beyond the surface-level narratives we often encounter in school. What immediately struck me is how Michael Harriot tackles 'THE UN-WHITEWASHED STORY OF AMERICA'. Growing up, history classes often felt like a series of dates and simplified narratives, especially when it came to Black history. It often felt like crucial parts were either glossed over, reframed to fit a certain agenda, or completely omitted. This book, however, doesn't shy away from the complexities, the raw truths, and the often-overlooked details that truly shape our understanding of the past. It feels like I'm finally getting the full, unfiltered picture, not just a sanitized or convenient version. It’s about confronting the uncomfortable truths and understanding the foundational role Black history plays in the fabric of the nation, rather than just an addendum. Michael Harriot's approach is both incredibly insightful and remarkably engaging. He has a unique way of breaking down historical events that makes them accessible, thought-provoking, and frankly, impossible to ignore. He weaves together facts, anecdotes, and critical analysis in a style that keeps you hooked, almost like you're having a conversation with a brilliant historian. It’s not just about learning new facts; it’s about reframing everything I thought I knew and understanding the profound, lasting impact of these historical events on today's society. The book challenges you to think critically about the narratives we've been fed and to question the origins of many societal norms and structures. It delves into the systemic nature of historical omissions and their consequences, providing a much-needed perspective for genuine historical literacy. On page 41, I've already had several 'aha!' moments, realizing how much vital information was missing from my education. It's empowering to gain this knowledge, even if some of the revelations are deeply unsettling. Knowing the full story allows for a more complete comprehension of current events and ongoing struggles. This isn't just history; it's a guide to understanding the present. If you're like me and crave a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of American history, especially Black history, then 'Black AF History' is an absolute must-read. It’s more than just a book; it’s an invitation to engage with history in a way that respects its full, often brutal, truth. I highly recommend picking up 'BLACK AF HISTORY: THE UN-WHITEWASHED STORY OF AMERICA' by Michael Harriot for yourself. It’s available widely, and I guarantee it will spark countless conversations and personal reflections. Let me know in the comments if you've read it or are planning to! What other books have you come across that completely changed your perspective on historical events? I'm always looking for more recommendations that offer such profound insights. Let's build a community around uncovering these essential historical narratives!
