Charles Drew, A Brief History:
June 3rd, 1904- April 1st, 1950
Charles Drew was a groundbreaking American physician, surgeon, and medical researcher best known for his revolutionary work in blood banking and blood plasma preservation, which has saved millions of lives worldwide.
Major Contributions to Medicine 🩸:
Blood Plasma & Blood Banking
• Developed methods to separate, preserve, and store blood plasma
• Plasma could be stored longer and used regardless of blood type
• Made large-scale blood storage and transport possible
World War II Impact:
• Led the “Blood for Britain” program, sending plasma to wounded soldiers and civilians
• Helped create the blueprint for modern blood banks
American Red Cross:
• Became the first medical director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank (1941)
• Organized nationwide blood collection systems
Ethical Stand & Civil Rights:
• Drew resigned from the Red Cross after it enforced racial segregation of blood
• Publicly stated there is no biological difference between blood from different races
