Black History Month Series: Day 6, Mary Fields
Mary Fields, A Brief History:
1832-1914
Stagecoach Mary Fields was a straight-up legend of the American West; tough, bold, and unapologetically herself.
Why she matters:
Stagecoach Mary shattered expectations around race, gender, age, and freedom. She didn’t ask permission to exist loudly or live bravely, she just did. One of the first Black women mail carriers in the United States
Her life & work:
• After gaining freedom, Mary worked for Catholic convents in the Midwest and later moved to Montana, where frontier life was harsh and dangerous.
• In her 60s, she took a U.S. Postal Service contract, delivering mail by stagecoach and on foot across rugged terrain and brutal winters.
• When roads were impassable, she carried the mail herself, never missing a delivery.
Personality & legacy:
• Smoked cigars, drank whiskey, swore like a sailor
• Ran her own businesses
• Befriended nuns, boxed men who disrespected her, and lived fully on her own terms
• Beloved by her community, even the kids adored her
Legacy:
Mary Fields broke barriers of race, gender, and age in the 19th century. She lived independently, worked dangerous jobs long after most people retired, and became a beloved local legend in Montana history.
