Black History Month Series: Day 6, Mary Fields

Mary Fields, A Brief History:

1832-1914

Stagecoach Mary Fields was a straight-up legend of the American West; tough, bold, and unapologetically herself.

Why she matters:

Stagecoach Mary shattered expectations around race, gender, age, and freedom. She didn’t ask permission to exist loudly or live bravely, she just did. One of the first Black women mail carriers in the United States

Her life & work:

   •   After gaining freedom, Mary worked for Catholic convents in the Midwest and later moved to Montana, where frontier life was harsh and dangerous.

   •   In her 60s, she took a U.S. Postal Service contract, delivering mail by stagecoach and on foot across rugged terrain and brutal winters.

   •   When roads were impassable, she carried the mail herself, never missing a delivery.

Personality & legacy:

   •   Smoked cigars, drank whiskey, swore like a sailor

   •   Ran her own businesses

   •   Befriended nuns, boxed men who disrespected her, and lived fully on her own terms

   •   Beloved by her community, even the kids adored her

Legacy:

Mary Fields broke barriers of race, gender, and age in the 19th century. She lived independently, worked dangerous jobs long after most people retired, and became a beloved local legend in Montana history.

... Read moreMary Fields’ story is a powerful testament to resilience and determination during a time when the American West was overwhelmingly dominated by white men, and opportunities for Black women were severely limited. Her journey from gaining freedom to becoming one of the first Black women to carry mail in the United States reflects not only personal courage but also a broader narrative of breaking social norms. Carrying the mail through Montana’s unforgiving wilderness, Mary was known for her remarkable work ethic, often traversing dangerous landscapes when others wouldn’t dare. This feat is impressive considering she took on this physically demanding job in her 60s, an age when most people would retire. Her ability to persevere despite harsh weather and isolation earned her great respect in her community. What makes Mary Fields even more remarkable is her unapologetic personality. Known for smoking cigars, drinking whiskey, and defending herself fiercely, she embodied a free-spirited and independent lifestyle that challenged conventional expectations for women, especially Black women, during her era. Running her own businesses and befriending nuns, her life was full of surprising contrasts that showed how multifaceted and strong her character was. Her legacy continues to inspire those who face obstacles related to race, gender, age, and societal expectations. Mary Fields reminds us that living boldly and with authenticity can leave an enduring impact. Celebrating Black History Month by highlighting such figures deepens our understanding of the diverse contributions that have shaped American history. For anyone passionate about history or seeking stories of trailblazers who pushed boundaries, Mary Fields' life offers valuable lessons about courage, perseverance, and being unapologetically yourself, no matter the challenges life throws your way.
