John Albert Burr, A Brief History:
Very little personal documentation survives about Burr’s early life, birthplace, education, or family. This was unfortunately common for many Black inventors of the 1800s, whose achievements were recorded in patent archives but whose personal histories were not widely preserved.
J.A. Burr was an African American inventor best known for improving the rotary blade lawn mower in the late 19th century. He was granted U.S. Patent No. 624,749 on May 9, 1899 for enhancements that made lawn mowers more efficient and practical.

Burr improved the rotary lawn mower blade design, making it:
