It's one of my absolute favorite games for breaking the ice and really getting to know people, whether it's new friends or old ones you just want to learn more about. You saw my examples, but let's dive a bit deeper into why this game is so much fun and how you can use it for your next get-together!
What Exactly is "2 Truths and a Lie"?
It’s super simple! Each person comes up with three statements about themselves. Two of them must be completely true, and one must be a complete lie. The goal for everyone else is to guess which statement is the lie! It’s a fantastic way to uncover surprising facts about people and get some laughs.
Why I Love This Game (and You Will Too!)
For me, it's the perfect conversation starter. Remember my picture with the "GET TO KNOW ME" text? That's exactly what this game does! It bypasses awkward small talk and jumps straight into sharing interesting tidbits about your life. It works wonderfully for:
Icebreakers: Whether it's a new group at work, a club, or a party where not everyone knows each other.
Family Gatherings: Even with people you know well, you'd be surprised what hidden stories come out!
Online Hangouts: It translates really well to video calls or even text-based games.
Stuck for Ideas? Here are My Tips for Crafting Your Own Statements!
Coming up with good statements is key to making the game engaging. You want your truths to be interesting, and your lie to be plausible enough to fool people! Here are some categories to get your brain buzzing:
Travel & Experiences: Like my statement about spending a month in the UK, think about unique trips, crazy adventures, or even small, memorable outings. "I once swam with dolphins," or "I've visited 10 different countries."
Hobbies & Skills: My voice acting gig is a good example! Do you have a quirky hobby, a hidden talent, or a skill that might surprise people? "I can juggle five balls," "I'm fluent in three languages," or "I once competed in a baking show."
Work & Education: Similar to my library work, what's a unique job you've had, or a strange course you took in college? "I used to be a lifeguard," or "My first job was at a theme park."
Childhood Memories: These can be goldmines for funny or unbelievable stories. "I broke my arm falling out of a tree," or "I met a famous celebrity when I was seven."
Food & Preferences: "I've never tried pizza," (a classic lie potential!) or "My favorite food is escargot."
Making Your Lie Convincing:
The trick is to make the lie sound just as believable as the truths, or even slightly more outlandish, but still possible! Don't make it too obvious. For instance, if all your truths are about travel, don't make your lie about something completely unrelated like "I hate chocolate" – that might stick out. Mix them up!
Playing "2 Truths and a Lie" at a Party or Online:
Party Fun: Get everyone to write down their statements beforehand, or have them come up with them on the spot. Go around the room, have each person share, and then everyone votes (you can raise hands, use whiteboards, or even a simple poll).
Online Version: This game is fantastic for Zoom calls! Each person can share their statements, and then everyone can type their guess into the chat or use poll features. It keeps engagement high and is a super easy virtual icebreaker.

Never Have I Ever: Players hold up fingers and put one down if they've done something another player says.
Most Likely To: Someone states a scenario (e.g., "Most likely to win the lottery and disappear"), and everyone points to who they think fits it best.
