Talking about your feelings

2024/12/7 Edited to

... Read moreWe've all been there: a swirling mix of emotions inside, but the words just won't come out. Sometimes, it feels like a tangled mess inside, and it's hard to cut and sort out. You might even wonder if it's better just keeping feelings inside, rather than burdening anyone else. I totally get it. I used to think that 'yapping about my feelings' made me seem needy or dramatic. But over time, I've learned that holding things in takes a huge toll, not just on me, but on my relationships too. When you don't talk about it, those unspoken emotions can silently erode connection. So, how do you even begin to untangle that knot? If you're struggling to analyze your current mood, start with some simple self-reflection. Grab a journal, or just find a quiet moment for yourself. Ask yourself: What am I feeling right now? Is it anger, sadness, frustration, anxiety, or something else entirely? Sometimes, just giving a name to the emotion can be incredibly clarifying. Where do you feel it in your body? Is there a tightness in your chest, a knot in your stomach? Try to trace it back – what happened just before you started feeling this way? Often, our emotions are signals telling us what we need. For example, anger might signal a boundary has been crossed, while sadness might point to a loss or unmet expectation. Learning to voice whatever is going on with you, even if it's just to yourself first, is the first step towards expressing yourself effectively. Once you have a clearer picture of what's going on inside, the next big step is figuring out how to talk about my feelings with others, especially in a relationship. It can feel daunting, but here are some things that have really helped me. First, pick the right time and place. Avoid bringing up heavy topics when you're rushed, stressed, or angry. Find a calm moment where both of you can give your full attention. Second, use 'I' statements. Instead of saying, 'You always make me feel...' try 'I feel [emotion] when [situation happens] because [explanation].' This focuses on your experience rather than sounding accusatory. For instance, 'I feel unheard when I try to share my concerns, and it makes me want to withdraw.' Be specific about what happened and how it affected you. Finally, clearly communicate what you need or what outcome you're hoping for. Are you looking for understanding, a solution, or just to be heard? Remember, there is nothing wrong with you voicing whatever is going on with you. Now, what if, despite your best efforts, the person you are with keeps rejecting you from you expressing yourself to them? This is a tough one, and the original article touches on it perfectly. If they consistently shut you down, it can feel like they just don't care about you or the relationship. Everyone's feelings are valid, and a healthy partnership requires a safe space to be able to voice whatever is going on. If that safe space isn't there, it becomes hard on the relationship overall. It’s a sign that perhaps a deeper conversation is needed about mutual respect and emotional support. Don't hold on to it and expect things to magically change. Your feelings matter, and expressing them is not a burden; it's an act of honesty and a pathway to deeper connection.
