Saying Goodbye to My Garden Plot
Two years on the waitlist to join this community garden in SW Portland- and only one growing season behind me - I’m saying goodbye to my beloved garden plot.
I was overcome with joy when my name finally appeared at the top of the waitlist last May and I was offered a plot in a community garden about 15 minutes north of my apartment. As a renter, I’d been growing in raised beds on top of my 10’x10’ shady patio, so this garden space opened up a whole new set of opportunities. I loved this plot and spent endless days amending the soil, planting my seedlings, watering, and harvesting an incredible bounty of vegetables.
However, late autumn arrived with a new set of opportunities - the chance to buy our own home.
So now, I’ll release my beloved little plot that I poured so much care into, and will let the next person in the endless waitlist have their own chance to enjoy it. Instead, I’ll be pouring my energy into turning my small yard into the lush garden of my dreams.

Community gardens bring together individuals who share a passion for gardening and local food. They provide a unique opportunity for those who may not have access to private gardening spaces. In cities like Portland, these communal plots foster creativity and allow for sustainable practices. As you transition from a community plot to your own garden, consider the best plants for your climate and soil. Tips for setting up a successful garden at home include planning your layout, selecting the right sunlight exposure, and understanding water needs. Joining local gardening clubs or online forums can also enhance your gardening experience, providing support and inspiration. Utilize resources available through agricultural extensions and horticultural societies to enhance your knowledge and gardening skills. Embrace this new phase and let your garden dreams flourish!

So exciting! Congrats on your new home!
