There was so much wildlife at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya. You could hear the howler monkey every morning and afternoon right from my balcony. Everywhere I went I saw an iguana or an agoutis. The pelican was so entertaining at the beach. He would swoop down and get little fish and then you would see his head go up and throat get big as he swallowed them. BUT the spider monkeys were by far my favorite to watch. There were dozens of them. I could sit and watch them all day. The babies on their mommas backs was the cutest thing ever!
... Read moreMy recent trip to Hard Rock Riviera Maya was absolutely brimming with unexpected wildlife encounters, making it so much more than just a beach vacation. While the howler monkeys' calls were a constant backdrop and the pelicans put on quite a show, I always kept an eye out for the more elusive creatures, especially the agoutis.
I remember seeing an agouti, much like the one I affectionately called Annie in my mind, diligently foraging in a grassy area near one of the walkways. These fascinating, rabbit-sized rodents, often with shiny brown or reddish-orange fur, are surprisingly common in the jungles of Mexico, yet many visitors might overlook them. They have slender legs and a body shape that's unique, almost like a miniature deer combined with a large guinea pig. Watching Annie meticulously sniff out tasty morsels on the ground was a small, quiet highlight of my day. They're typically shy, but in places like Hard Rock Riviera Maya, where nature is integrated into the resort design, they become a wonderful part of the scenery.
For anyone hoping to experience these unique creatures, here are a few tips I picked up during my stay to maximize your wildlife spotting opportunities:
Patience is Key: Wildlife isn't on a schedule. Sometimes you just need to sit quietly by a garden or a patch of forest. I found that early mornings or late afternoons were often the best times to see animals, as they're usually more active when the sun isn't at its peak. This is when I often spotted iguanas, like Iggy, sunning themselves on concrete paths, or heard the distinct calls of howler monkeys, like Hooty, from the trees.
Look Everywhere: Don't just look up for monkeys! Agoutis are ground dwellers, constantly on the move. Keep an eye on the ground, in the bushes, and even near water features. I also saw pelicans, like Peter, swooping for fish in the shallow waters by the beach, an incredible sight that demanded attention.
Respect Their Space: It's tempting to get close, but wild animals are best observed from a distance. Never try to feed them, as it can disrupt their natural foraging behaviors and make them dependent on humans. Our goal is to enjoy their presence without interfering with their natural lives. This goes for the playful spider monkeys, like Monte, hanging from branches near the resort buildings, and their adorable babies, too.
Embrace the Unexpected: While I went hoping to see monkeys and iguanas, encountering an agouti foraging peacefully, or watching a pelican hunt, truly made my trip to Mexico unforgettable. The Hard Rock Riviera Maya does an excellent job of coexisting with the local ecosystem, creating a genuine "Wildlife @ HRRM" experience where you can see spider monkeys with their babies in the trees, iguanas, and even agoutis like Annie, just going about their day.
These small, wild moments added so much depth to my vacation. If you're heading to the Riviera Maya, keep your eyes peeled for these wonderful creatures – you might just find that an agouti makes a lasting impression on your trip!
