Please I need tips 😓

2024/6/20 Edited to

... Read moreOMG, I completely relate to this feeling! It's like your brain just hits a 'reset' button on your drawing skills, especially after focusing on something else for so long like graphic design. I’ve definitely been there, staring at a blank page and wondering where my creativity went, or why my characters suddenly look so stiff. It's a classic art block, and trust me, you're not alone in feeling like you 'forgot how to draw' faces, particularly expressive ones. Drawing faces, whether for human characters or adorable frog-like creatures in wizard hats, is genuinely one of the trickiest parts of character design. There's so much emotion, personality, and subtle detail packed into such a small area. When you're used to the precision and often more geometric nature of logos and stamps, shifting to organic, flowing forms can feel like learning a new language. My own journey with faces often starts with feeling like I'm just making generic circles and sticking features on, much like a stamp, before anything clicks. Here are a few things I've found super helpful when I'm struggling with character faces, especially if you're aiming for that 'little child/baby' vibe: First, start with the basics – simple shapes are your best friend. Forget about perfection for a moment. Grab a pencil and just doodle circles for heads. Then, lightly sketch in guidelines for where the eyes, nose, and mouth might go. For a child-like or baby face, think about roundness. Everything is softer, less defined. Large eyes are key for conveying innocence and cuteness, just like your frog character's large eyes in the sketch! Don't be afraid to exaggerate them a bit. Next, focus on expressions, not just features. Instead of drawing a perfect eye, think about what emotion you want to convey. Is your character happy, sad, curious? A slight arch of an eyebrow, a subtle curve of the mouth – these small changes can make a huge difference. Try drawing just eye shapes with different eyebrow positions, or just mouth shapes. You might find that experimenting with these elements separately helps break down the overwhelming feeling. When I was trying to make my own 'little guy' character feel more alive, I spent ages just practicing different smiles and frowns on simple circles. Another game-changer for me was using references, but not just copying. Look at photos of babies or young children, or even other character designs you admire. Pay attention to how artists simplify features for a child-like appearance: smaller noses, rounder cheeks, softer jawlines. For your froggy friend, maybe look at cute animal illustrations! How do other artists give a frog personality? You can adapt those principles to your own style. Remember, even though your background is graphic design, those principles of composition and color (like your color swatches!) are still incredibly valuable. Finally, don't be afraid to embrace the 'ugly' stage. Every drawing goes through it. That initial 'stamp' feeling is totally normal! It’s part of the process where you’re laying down the foundation. Keep refining, keep adding small details, and don't be afraid to erase and redraw. The more you practice, the more your unique style will emerge. Sometimes, stepping away for a bit and coming back with fresh eyes, or even just doodling randomly, can help unlock that block. You've got this! Your frog character already has so much charm in those monochrome pencil sketches.
