DIY Fish Swaddle Tutorial 🐟✨
Because every baby deserves to be a cozy little guppy.
What You’ll Need:
✂️ Scissors
🪡 Seam ripper (trust me, you’ll need it)
1 yard of liner fabric (I used a soft textured minky blanket fabric)
1 yard of cotton blend fabric (pick a cute print you love!)
Sew-on Velcro (optional, for a snuggly fastener)
Your trusty sewing machine + standard sewing supplies
Pins… so many pins. (Like, seriously. You cannot have too many.)
Step 1: Choose Your Fabric
This might just be the hardest part (besides keeping your sanity later). There are so many adorable fabric options, and narrowing it down is a struggle. I grabbed a yard of each fabric and was able to make two full swaddles with just a bit of scrap leftover.
Tip: You can get away with only a half yard of each, but having extra is always a nice safety net. Choose something soft and cozy but still breathable—babies are tiny heat machines, and overheating isn’t cute.
Step 2: Make (or Print) Your Pattern 🎨
Your pattern should include:
2 back pieces (liner + outside fabric)
2 wraps (one left, one right)
4 side fins (I used only liner fabric here)
1 tail fin (also just liner)
Sketch it out or print a template, and mark exactly where your wraps, fins, and tail will attach.
Step 3: Cut Out Your Pieces ✂️
Carefully cut all your pattern pieces, making sure measurements line up so everything will fit together. This is also a good time to triple-check that the wraps will actually wrap and the fins will line up where you want them.
Step 4: Sew the Bits & Pieces
Start with the smaller parts: fins, tail, and the foot pocket. Place the fabric pieces right sides together, pin them (extra important with slippery minky), and sew around the edges.
Trim any bulky seam allowances, then flip everything right-side out and smooth your edges. Congratulations, your fish has body parts now! 🐠
Step 5: Build the Sandwich 🥪
This is the fun (and slightly chaotic) part:
Lay down your big liner piece, right side up.
Position your fins where you want them.
Add your wraps.
Finally, place your outer fabric piece, right side down on top.
It’s a fabric sandwich! (Fins sticking out = the crunchy lettuce.)
⚠️ Warning: No amount of sheer determination will keep this stack from shifting. Use. The. Pins. If you like yourself, pin everything down now.
Step 6: Sew It All Together
Sew around the entire swaddle with about a ¼" seam allowance. Slow down around the fins and wraps—those spots get thick and tricky.
💡 Pro tip: Test stitch length and tension on scraps first. Otherwise, you’ll spend hours swearing, seam-ripping, and re-doing the same section five times. (Ask me how I know…)
👉 Don’t forget to leave a 5-inch gap unsewn so you can flip your masterpiece right-side out.
Step 7: Flip & Finish
Once flipped, give your fish a good smoothing and admire how adorable it’s becoming. Close up the gap with a neat topstitch. and line up the foot pouch part on the bottom above the tail so it sticks out then top stitch down the sides or you and pin the tail up and sew it "inside out" so when you turn out the foot pouch the tail is where it needs to be amd your seams are tucked nicely inside.
✨ Optional Step: Add Velcro Fasteners
If you want your swaddle wraps to stay snug without needing origami-level folding skills, Velcro is your friend.
Before you sew your wraps into the sandwich, lay them out flat.
Decide where you want your Velcro strips to line up (a good spot is near the edge of each wrap so they overlap neatly).
Sew the soft, fuzzy side of the Velcro on the inside of one wrap, and the scratchy hook side on the outside of the opposite wrap.
⚠️ Pro tip: Always double-check placement by overlapping them before you stitch—otherwise you’ll end up with two scratchy sides kissing and zero fastener power. Been there. Not fun.
Once Velcro is securely stitched on, continue with the “fabric sandwich” step as normal.
Boom—now your fish swaddle has little secret fasteners, and your baby won’t be able to wiggle free like a tiny magician. 🪄🐠
Step 9: Celebrate 🎉
Tada! You just made a snuggly fish swaddle! Sure, you lost a little sanity and maybe muttered a few choice words at your sewing machine—but it’s DONE. Pour yourself a margarita (or your beverage of choice), wrap your baby burrito in their new fishy cocoon, and bask in your crafty glory.

It helps feed both layers of fabric evenly, preventing shifting and puckering. If you're still struggling, temporary fabric adhesive spray can also temporarily hold layers together without distorting the fabric. Remember to use a ballpoint or stretch needle if you opt for knit fabrics, as they glide between the fibers instead of piercing them, reducing skipped stitches and runs. I learned this the hard way after a few frustrating attempts with a universal needle! As you're creating your unique whale-themed baby swaddle, think about extra personal touches. Beyond the basic design, you could embroider the baby's initial on one of the fins or add a small, soft felt applique (ensure it's securely stitched for safety). You could even adapt the pattern to create different "animal" swaddles—maybe a little bear, a bunny, or a friendly octopus! The possibilities are endless once you understand the basic construction. Imagine a whole set of coordinated fabric pieces for various animal swaddles! Finally, let's consider care and longevity for your handmade creation. Since you're putting so much love into this, you want it to last! For most cotton and minky blends, a gentle cycle with cold water and air drying or tumble drying on low heat is best. Avoid high heat, as it can damage the minky's softness and cause cotton to shrink further. Using a mild, baby-friendly detergent will also protect the fabric and ensure it's safe for your little one.
