Emily and Jack’s love story has my whole heart. When Jack moves back to Rome after being gone, his long time feud with the towns Queen Bee, Emily Walker, picks right back up where it started. Arguing over who gets the best table at the coffee shop, bickering over their past, and banters that just make the tension OH SO GOOD. I mean it, the tension is sizzling. Not until Ms Emily Walker makes a huge mistake that puts a big secret of hers at risk of being exposed, does she (drunkenly) run to Jack for help.
*cue the *ahem* TENSION
And the rest, well, you’ll just have to see.
But Emily Walker, the woman that you are.
I resonated so deeply with this book. It’s funny, because when I read Practice Makes Perfect, I thought to myself wow I’m so much like Annie. Her softness and seemingly innocent vibe, I thought it was so me.
But then I read about Emily, and found myself relating to her feelings so much more than I thought I would. The oldest sister, who wants to protect and who is afraid of change because what’s familiar is so comfortable, but it’s slipping through your fingers and there isn’t a thing you can do about it. Now I wish I could be as bold as Emily, that’s where I think the “Annie” in me comes in. Unfortunately, I know I’ll resonate with Madison in the next book too with how she was described in this book, which means I’ll never know which Walker girl I am because ALL OF THEM ARE JUST SO RELATABLE.
There were a few scenes in this book that, while great, I couldn’t wrap my mind around due to the setting or the circumstance they were currently in. That’s vague, I know, but I don’t want to spoil!
Overall, I read this book in like a few days really. This story describes grief in such a unique but relatable way, and I appreciated the author for not skipping around writing the hard things (like grief). It needs to be written about because it’s well, real.

It gives a sense of community and history to Emily and Jack's rivalry and eventual romance. You can almost feel the small-town gossip and the comfort of familiar faces, which makes Emily's struggles with change even more poignant. It truly felt like I was visiting the best small town ever right alongside the characters. Honestly, with such vivid descriptions of the characters, the setting, and that iconic Beg, Borrow, or Steal book cover, it's easy to see why this book inspires so much creativity. I wouldn't be surprised if there's tons of Beg, Borrow, or Steal fanart out there, capturing those sizzling moments between Emily and Jack or the picturesque views of Rome, KY. Sarah Adams has a way of painting a scene that just begs to be imagined, drawn, or even written about by fans. This book left me feeling warm, fuzzy, and completely invested in the world she created!
