your fear of looking stupid is holding you back!!! first clips are October 2025 —> last clip is April 2026 ✨
and I promise you- I looked ridiculous many, MANY times in those 6 months 😂 (& I still do sometimes, they’re not perfect yet lol😤)
but that’s just a part of the journey - I wouldn’t have gotten my butterfly pull-ups to where they are now without those moments!! everyone starts some where. you have to be willing to do the wonky reps to build your way to the pretty ones 💅✨
for my non crossfit friends, these are much harder than they might look😅 you need a lot of strength and proper technique to do these well, contrary to what you may have heard lol
!! including strict strength- these are not a way around strict pull-ups. strict pull-ups and chest to bar pull-ups are actually a prerequisite for these (so you should be able to do those easily before attempting !!)
if you’re currently working on butterfly pullups and feel discouraged - KEEP GOING!! you will absolutely get there 🦋✨

Starting to learn a challenging exercise like butterfly pull-ups can feel really intimidating, especially when you’re worried about looking awkward or failing in front of others. I’ve been there, trying and often looking silly in the gym, but that discomfort is honestly part of the process. What helped me push through was embracing those imperfect reps as valuable learning steps rather than setbacks. It’s crucial to recognize that butterfly pull-ups require more than just brute strength. Developing proper technique takes consistent practice and patience. Before attempting them, you should be comfortable with strict pull-ups and chest-to-bar pull-ups, as these build the foundational strength and control you need. Don't rush trying to perfect the movement; allow yourself to do 'wonky' or imperfect reps initially—this repetition is how your muscles and coordination develop. For anyone feeling discouraged, keep in mind that progress can be slow and non-linear. Celebrate small improvements and focus on consistency over perfection. Using quality workout gear that makes you feel confident, like the Alphalete apparel I wore, can boost motivation and comfort during those tough sessions. Also, connecting with a community such as #crossfitgirls or #womenofcrossfit can provide support and encouragement. Remember, the fear of looking silly shouldn’t hold you back. Every athlete starts somewhere, and the journey itself—full of awkward moments and hard work—is what leads to breakthroughs. Patience, practice, and perseverance are your best allies in mastering butterfly pull-ups and other complex movements in CrossFit gymnastics.
