Starting handstands later in life can seem intimidating, but my experience proves it’s absolutely doable with dedication. Initially, I got into calisthenics because I admired how CrossFitters incorporated handstand walks. However, I quickly realized that mastering handstands demands focused practice distinct from the multitasking nature of typical CrossFit training. Switching to calisthenics allowed me to work intensively on handstands two to three times per week with guidance from a coach. This focused approach was essential in building the strength, balance, and coordination needed to hold handstands confidently. One important insight is that doing handstands fresh versus under workout fatigue is very different. Conditioning your body under fatigue is a skill that CrossFit develops well but requires experience. For adults starting handstand training, it’s crucial to build foundational strength first—wrist conditioning, core stability, and shoulder mobility all play key roles. Using progressions like wall-supported handstands or press handstands helps build confidence. Consistency is key; even practicing just a few minutes daily leads to steady improvement. In addition to physical training, mindset matters too—believing you’re never “too old” to start helped me push past doubts. Wearing supportive and comfortable gear like Alphalete’s amplify contour shorts and open back bra boosted my confidence during workouts. Finally, I’m excited to soon offer 1:1 online handstand coaching, where personalized guidance will help others embark on their handstand journey, no matter their age or fitness background. Remember, the journey is unique for everyone, but with focus and patience, your handstand goals are within reach.
