How I handle overstimulating events as an autistic

Before I was diagnosed, I didn't understand why everything was so loud. Why when I went to the fair, the farmers market, even the grocery store... I fell apart. It felt like my brain was on fire. I didn't understand then that it was sensory overwhelm.

Enter autism and ADHD diagnosis. Knowing what I know now, I prepare ahead of time for events that are loud, chaotic or just generally busy. Is it perfect every time? Absolutely not... But being prepared helps my brain adjust before the event itself.

Tell me in the comments - Do you find large scale events to be overwhelming? What supports do you use?

... Read moreOverstimulating environments can be particularly challenging for autistic individuals. As a neurodivergent person, understanding sensory processing can significantly impact your experiences in public settings. It’s common for autistic people to feel overwhelmed by noise, bright lights, and crowded spaces. With rising awareness of autism and ADHD, many are learning to develop effective strategies to cope with sensory overload. Some techniques include creating a sensory toolkit, utilizing noise-canceling headphones, or practicing mindfulness before heading into crowded areas. Planning ahead is crucial; knowing the layout of a venue can help you identify quiet areas or exits if you need a break. Engaging in calming practices, such as deep breathing or visualizing a peaceful space, can also reduce anxiety before attending events. Additionally, connecting with others in the autistic community can offer support and shared experiences, making you feel less isolated. Participate in forums and discussions to share your own tips and learn from others’ experiences. Remember that it's okay to leave an event early or to take breaks. Ultimately, everyone’s sensory thresholds are different, and developing personalized coping strategies is key to enjoying social gatherings. By embracing accommodations and sharing your challenges, you’ll foster an environment of understanding and awareness.
