A tour of my discarded ADHD hobbies

If you are an ADHDer, you are probably all too familiar with a hobby graveyard... You probably have one of your own! But just in case you don't, or aren't familiar, a hobby graveyard is just all of the discarded hobbies those of us with ADHD have sucked every bit of dopamine from.

They are in a graveyard because we often leave them as soon as they come on. For me, I can cycle through dozens of hobbies in any given year. Sometimes, they come back around. But most of the time, I just have supplies all over my house I never end up using again... Oops.

... Read moreFor many individuals with ADHD, a hobby graveyard is a common phenomenon, where unfinished projects and abandoned interests accumulate over time. This collection of discarded hobbies can reflect the diverse passions and curiosities that we encounter. Common hobbies may include crafting, painting, or even sports, yet they often fall by the wayside due to the fleeting nature of attention and motivation seen in ADHD. Understanding the psychology of these hobby shifts can provide insights into better managing interests. To make the most of your hobbies, it's crucial to practice self-compassion; allowing yourself to explore new interests without the pressure of completion can lead to more fulfilling experiences. Additionally, consider setting tangible goals or deadlines for each hobby to maintain focus and direction. You might find it helpful to rotate between interests, giving yourself room to rewrite your narrative around hobbies and passion. Engagement with supportive communities, such as online forums or local clubs, can also rejuvenate your enthusiasm for various projects and help combat the feelings of isolation often experienced. Remember, having a hobby graveyard isn’t a failure; it’s a testament to your rich curiosity and creativity.
