Why autism self diagnosis is valid

There is a lot of talk around autism self diagnosis and why it’s wrong, but let’s get something straight: medical diagnosis is not possible for some people. Whether related to discrimination or racial bias, access to medical care, finances, or just personal choice, people have their reasons.

It’s not as though we look up one study and proclaim autism… It’s studies, and research, tests and peer collaboration… Which for many of us, does involve clinical diagnosis in the end.

Either way, it doesn’t affect anyone else but ourselves. How is it harming you?

... Read moreWhen I first started exploring the possibility of being autistic, the biggest hurdle wasn't just understanding myself, but navigating the immense skepticism surrounding self-diagnosis. I constantly heard things like 'you're just seeking attention' or 'everyone's a little bit autistic now.' But from my journey, I can tell you there's a powerful and legitimate 'why' behind why so many of us rely on self-identification. One of the most pressing reasons, often overlooked by those who assume formal diagnosis is readily available, is the sheer inaccessibility of professional assessments. We're not just talking about long waiting lists; for many, it's about living in 'medical deserts' where specialist services simply don't exist within a reasonable distance. Add to that the astronomical cost of private assessments – often thousands of dollars – and it becomes clear that a formal diagnosis is a luxury, not a universal right. This is especially true for marginalized communities, where racial bias and systemic discrimination can further complicate access to empathetic and accurate care. And let's be honest, the medical field isn't always as up-to-date as we'd hope. Many general practitioners, and even some specialists, still operate on outdated understandings of autism, particularly how it presents in adults, women, or non-binary individuals. I’ve heard countless stories, and experienced some myself, where concerns were dismissed because 'you don't look autistic' or 'you can hold a conversation.' This makes the path to a formal diagnosis incredibly challenging and often invalidating, pushing people to seek answers elsewhere. So, when we talk about self-diagnosis, we're not talking about a casual TikTok trend. For many of us, it involves extensive, rigorous research. We dive deep into peer-reviewed articles, compare our lived experiences against official diagnostic criteria like the DSM-5, read countless accounts from #actuallyautistic individuals, and participate in peer-led support groups. This isn't a quick google search; it's often years of meticulous self-reflection and pattern recognition, connecting a lifetime of seemingly unrelated struggles under a unifying framework. The validation found in self-diagnosis isn't just about labeling oneself; it's about unlocking a deeper understanding of who you are. For me, it brought immense relief and allowed me to finally make sense of my unique way of processing the world. It’s empowered me to find effective coping strategies, advocate for my needs, and connect with a supportive neurodivergent community. This newfound self-awareness can dramatically improve mental health, reduce burnout, and foster a sense of belonging that was previously missing. Ultimately, my self-diagnosis doesn't impact anyone else negatively. Instead, it has profoundly improved my quality of life. It’s a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of neurodivergent individuals seeking answers when formal systems fail them. If you're on a similar journey, know that your self-discovery and extensive personal research are incredibly valid and profoundly impactful for your well-being.

If you’ve done a ton of research and see how much you relate to other autistics like I have than you can self diagnose. It’s usually accepted in the autistic community unlike some comments here.

I was diagnosed at 17. But before that, I did two years of research (ironically, of autistic intensity). I willingly accept people who are self-diagnosed, provided that they do more information gathering than a few TikToks. ADHD, on the other hand… false self-diagnoses are SO prevalent based off of stereotypes seen on social media. When someone says they have ADHD, my first question is always something along the lines of, “like, actually?” This stops people and makes them think for a sec and from their answer I can usually tell if they’ve done digging or just watched some TikToks.
