Why trauma informed care is helpful to autistics

I have been a big supporter of trauma informed care since I spent time working in the non-profit sector in 2014. It gives great ideas and tools for working with people who have experienced trauma, and because of this, it’s also successful in working with folks without trauma.

I appreciate that it focuses on transparency and communication, as these are things I need help with as an autistic person.

Are you familiar with trauma informed care? Where did you learn about it?

... Read moreTrauma-informed care (TIC) is increasingly recognized as a crucial approach in supporting autistic individuals. It acknowledges the profound impact of trauma not only from life experiences but also from the societal challenges faced by the autistic community. Many autistics experience trauma due to misunderstanding and stigma, making TIC a vital framework for support. By prioritizing safety, trustworthiness, and empowerment, TIC encourages autonomy and self-advocacy, which are essential for personal growth. Moreover, the framework promotes transparency and effective communication, key elements for individuals on the autism spectrum who may struggle with traditional therapeutic methods. TIC creates an inclusive environment where autistic individuals feel understood and valued, fostering a sense of community that is often lacking. Research shows that the integration of trauma-informed practices in services for autistic individuals leads to better outcomes in mental health and overall quality of life. Support groups and community initiatives that endorse trauma-informed principles offer vital resources and interconnectedness. Understanding the relationship between trauma and neurodiversity is crucial for professionals and caregivers alike, as it leads to customized care strategies that truly address the unique needs of autistic individuals. As awareness grows, it’s important to continue educating others about the significance of trauma-informed care and its application within the autistic community. Engaging discussions about personal experiences with trauma can illuminate the diverse needs of autistics and enhance the effectiveness of TIC.

Being the “safe parent” doesn’t always feel good — and that’s exactly why so many parents miss this green flag. Your child melts down, unravels, clings, cries, or shuts down because their nervous system trusts you most. That’s not failure — that’s connection, attachment, and safety in action.
