The Rebuilt Series No.7

This article is meant to raise awareness about fawning. For those already familiar with it, this is simply another resource for the community: one more entry point, one more moment of focused attention on this issue. Perhaps the best thing we can do for ourselves and others is to listen, validate, and offer resources. No judgment needed.

*What is the Rebuilt Series? Like many adults coming from a dysfunctional family, having gone through an abusive early social group, and/or having survived SA and DV, I’ve heard too much unsolicited advice, judgment, and preaching when seeking support. So much more than understanding. Rather than reassurance, this series shares the vocabulary, strategies, and clarity that I’ve gained over time.

... Read moreThe fawn trauma response is a compelling yet often misunderstood survival mechanism that emerges in reaction to social threats or abusive environments. It involves people becoming overly submissive, agreeable, or helpful to placate potential threats, often at the cost of their own boundaries and authentic feelings. This behavior is not a conscious choice but a conditioned automatic reaction aimed at safety and survival. From my personal experience and observations within trauma-informed communities, survivors of childhood abuse, domestic violence, or other forms of social trauma often struggle with recognizing this pattern. The fawning response can feel like second nature, making it difficult to assert personal needs or establish clear boundaries. This internal conflict may lead to further emotional distress and challenges in relationships. One critical insight is that fawning is a response to an environment where refusal or resistance resulted in harm, leaving survivors conditioned to prioritize others' needs over their own to avoid danger. Understanding this helps to diminish self-blame and promotes compassion for oneself during the healing process. Healing often begins with gradually rebuilding a personal 'system of preferences'—a toolkit of inner signals and boundaries that prioritize one’s safety and wellbeing without the interference of conditioned fears. Therapy, peer support groups, and trauma-informed counseling can guide survivors through recognizing automatic fawning behaviors and developing assertiveness skills. Moreover, it’s essential to recognize that abusers typically do not engage in reasoning or mutual understanding; they operate based on control and power dynamics. This makes the fawn response a physiological and psychological attempt to survive uncontrollable situations, not a weakness or failure. By increasing awareness and offering clear vocabulary around fawn response within communities, survivors can feel validated and find resources tailored to their experiences. Listening without judgment and providing steady support create safe spaces for survivors to explore and reclaim their autonomy. Ultimately, understanding fawning is an important step towards healing. It allows survivors to reframe their experiences with empathy, learn new coping strategies that honor their boundaries, and slowly dismantle the automatic survival behaviors that no longer serve them. Sharing these insights, as done in The Rebuilt Series, empowers those affected and helps build a trauma-informed community where everyone’s experiences are recognized and respected.
