As someone with both Physical Health & Mental Health issues, I get so many of these comments a lot. #chronicillness #spoonie

2024/12/6 Edited to

... Read moreIt's incredible how perfectly that 'Chronic Illness Bingo' card captures the daily reality for so many of us, isn't it? As someone navigating life with chronic physical and mental health issues, I swear I could yell 'Bingo!' after almost every conversation sometimes. Hearing things like 'But you don't look sick...' or 'Have you tried yoga?' can feel so incredibly invalidating. It's like our struggles are dismissed because they're not visible, or worse, because someone thinks they have a quick fix for something profoundly complex. What I've learned on this journey is that these comments often come from a place of ignorance, not malice, but that doesn't make them any less painful. When someone tells you to 'just push through it' or suggests 'maybe you should stop complaining,' it can feel like they're questioning your pain, your effort, and even your sanity. It truly highlights the need for a 'chronic illness club' – a community where we feel seen, heard, and understood without having to constantly justify our existence or our symptoms. For me, coping with these remarks has become a part of managing my condition. One strategy I've found helpful is to have a few go-to responses ready. Sometimes, a simple 'I appreciate your concern, but my doctors and I are managing this' can be enough. Other times, a more direct 'Please don't minimize my experience; this is a serious condition' is necessary. It's about setting boundaries and protecting your energy, which is already in short supply for many of us spoonies. Another thing that has been a game-changer is connecting with others who truly get it. That's why this 'chronic illness club' idea resonates so much. Whether it's online forums, local support groups, or even just a trusted friend who also lives with a chronic condition, having a space to vent, share tips, and find solidarity is invaluable. It reminds you that you're not alone in facing these challenges and these often-dismissive comments. We can share our 'bingo' wins (or losses!) and find strength in our collective experiences. Educating those around us, gently, can also make a difference. Explaining that chronic illness isn't always visible, or that there's no magic cure, can slowly shift perspectives. But remember, it's not your job to educate everyone. Your priority is your well-being. So next time someone tries to hand you a 'bingo' square, know that your 'chronic illness club' stands with you, understanding every single frustrating comment you receive.
