From my observations and personal encounters in Morocco, the question of why poorer families often have more children is complex and rooted deeply in cultural and economic realities. Additionally, limited access to education and family planning resources contributes to higher birth rates. In many rural and poor urban areas, knowledge about contraception can be scarce or accompanied by cultural or religious taboos that discourage its use. Economic factors also play a role. While raising children can be costly, in agrarian societies, more children often mean more hands to help with farming and household work, which can be essential for family survival. Cultural traditions and social expectations further encourage larger families. In some communities, having many children is seen as a blessing and a status symbol, reinforcing the cycle. Understanding these multifaceted reasons is crucial for policymakers and organizations aiming to provide effective support, improve education on family planning, and enhance socio-economic conditions to empower families to make informed choices about their size.
