Sometimes, a lack of customers can mean things aren't as fresh as they should be, or staff might be less attentive. Speaking of ambiance, sometimes a place can be too dimly lit, so much so that it feels like they're trying to hide something. While a cozy atmosphere is lovely, if I can barely read the menu or see what's on my plate, it makes me suspicious. I once walked into a place where the outdoor potted plants looked completely neglected, withered and sad, and it made me wonder if that same level of care (or lack thereof) extended to the kitchen. Then there are the service red flags. If I'm left waiting at the host stand for an unusually long time without acknowledgment, or if the staff seems indifferent and rushed even when it's not busy, it puts a dampener on the entire experience. It makes you feel unwelcome, and that's not how a dining experience should start. And the menu itself can hold clues. An overly extensive menu with dozens of different cuisines often suggests that nothing is made fresh; it's probably all frozen and microwaved. I prefer places with a focused menu, indicating a chef who specializes in a few dishes done exceptionally well. Strong chemical cleaning smells when you're trying to eat can also be off-putting, making me wonder if they just did a quick clean-up rather than maintaining ongoing cleanliness. Ultimately, my biggest takeaway is to trust your gut feeling. If something feels off, it probably is. Don't be afraid to discreetly observe your surroundings before committing to a meal. Sometimes, walking out before you even order is the best decision you can make for a better dining experience elsewhere!
