Childhood trauma really said, “Here’s some hypervigilance. It’ll come in handy in vet med.” 😂

Now I can clock a patient’s body language from across the hospital.😮‍💨😛

... Read moreWorking in veterinary medicine, I've found that being naturally observant is a huge advantage. Childhood hypervigilance — always being alert to subtle cues — translates perfectly into this field. For example, when a pet comes into the clinic, there are many small signs that indicate how they are feeling, even before any physical examination begins. A flick of the ear, the way they hold their tail, their breathing rate, subtle shifts in posture — these details tell you if the animal is anxious, scared, or in pain. One particular aspect I've learned to rely on is reading the 'itchy ones' — those pets that are constantly trying to scratch or shake parts of their body. This can be a sign of underlying discomfort or dental pain, which often goes unnoticed by owners. Being able to spot these subtle signs quickly allows vet techs to alert the vet for prompt intervention. In my experience, hypervigilance trained during childhood, though often seen as a challenge, proved to be an unexpected gift in veterinary care. It sharpened my attention to details and helped me become more empathetic toward my patients. I've seen that recognizing distress early not only facilitates better treatment but also builds trust with pet owners, who appreciate the care and attentiveness. If you are working in vet med or considering it, cultivating the skill to notice the small things can be incredibly helpful. Watch for body language cues — the eyes, ears, tail, and even subtle muscle tensing — to better understand your patients. This approach enhances the quality of care and can make a big difference in outcomes.
