Things I’d tell anyone starting a GLP-1

It’s not always going to be sunshine and skinny jeans

• You will feel weird at first

• The fatigue is something else - but it’s only temporary

• Protein matters more than you think

• Water is non-negotiable

• Your brain will change before your body does

• Don’t compare your timeline

And most importantly:

You are not cheating.

You are treating a medical condition.

... Read moreStarting a GLP-1 treatment can be a transformative journey, but it's one that comes with its unique challenges and learning curves. From my experience and listening to many others' stories, the initial phase can indeed feel strange as your body adjusts to the medication. Fatigue is a common side effect early on, but it's important to remember that this usually passes as your body acclimates. One critical insight that's often underestimated is the role of protein in your diet. While many focus on reducing calories, maintaining adequate protein intake supports muscle preservation and overall health, which is essential on this treatment. Alongside that, staying well-hydrated is non-negotiable—not just for general health, but also because GLP-1 medications can affect appetite and digestion, making water intake crucial. Mentally, the adjustment may be even more profound than the physical changes you see. It’s perfectly normal to notice shifts in how you perceive hunger and fullness, which can feel disorienting at first. Try to embrace these changes instead of resisting them, as they are part of how the medication works. A vital aspect to keep in mind is not to compare your progress with others. Everyone’s body responds differently, and timelines for noticeable body changes vary widely. Patience and self-compassion are your best allies. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, using GLP-1 treatments is not about taking shortcuts or 'cheating' your body. It’s a legitimate medical approach to treating conditions like obesity and diabetes. Accepting this mindset can help reduce feelings of guilt or discouragement, encouraging a healthier and more sustainable relationship with your treatment and yourself. Sharing these experiences and tips with others on similar paths can create a supportive community. If you’re considering or just beginning GLP-1 therapy, remember you’re not alone, and it’s okay to seek advice, share struggles, and celebrate progress at your own pace.
