My love story 👩🏻💜👨🏾 (Part 2/2)

Welcome back! 😄 As you may recall from Part 1, my best friend Jordan and I graduated from college in 2017. Eventually, both of us attended different schools for our Master’s degrees. We talked almost every day, even if it was just sending memes on IG. He started developing a HUGE personal project in grad school, and I was excited to help him as much as I could. (We're still working on it, to this day!)

It was probably in 2021/2022 when I started to think of him as more than a friend…more than even a best friend. I didn't have any other guys in my life that came remotely close to the bond we shared. We'd both heard people tell us to 1) be equally yoked, and 2) marry our best friend. Which was all good…but I'd always imagined settling down with someone who looked more like me 👨🏻 I’d pray to God about this specific item, thinking an Asian guy would make me happy.

But, I kid you not — I HEARD God telling me that ethnicity wasn’t that important 😳 And it was definitely not my own thoughts telling me this 😅 With that in mind, I seriously considered Jordan. He’d always been a man of integrity, and our friendship was based on mutual respect and shared interests. So, after a BIG nudge from my sister, I realized after 7-8 years that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Jordan. I figured if my desire aligned with God’s will, He would allow it to happen. And if Jordan didn’t reciprocate, I’d know it was time to move on 🙃

In 2023, I finally decided to confess my romantic feelings to Jordan. That summer, I got to do some mission work in LA, where he lived. Seeing him again in person — for multiple days in a row — confirmed that I really did love him 🥹 After the mission ended, I stayed at his place for a day. We got lunch, he drove me around LA, we watched Back to the Future, and I slept on his pull-out couch. The morning I was about to fly back home, we sat next to each other on the couch, and I started crying 😭 I was afraid we might not see each other again! I told him I never wanted to stop being friends… but I wanted to know if he ever considered taking our friendship to the next level.

We had a solemn conversation, including the topic of my parents, whom we both KNEW wouldn’t approve of him (bc r@cism 😒). But despite all our concerns about my parents and the future, we officially started dating a few days later! After nearly 10 YEARS of pure friendship! 🤯👩🏻‍❤️‍👨🏾

Since then, we’re still long-distance (groan 😩🥲), and we've been in premarital counseling for a few months now. Our love for each other has only grown 🥰 I can’t think of anyone who fits me as well as he does, and we are super excited for the next chapter of our lives together! God has blessed us in so many ways, and our story reminds me that if we really wait on Him and trust in Him, He will give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4) 🙏 Though we’ve faced trials — and I’m sure there will be more — we’ll always have Jesus and one another 💜
