Chicken Coop Upgrade

I'd fallen victim to 'chicken math,' and suddenly, my girls needed a much bigger space! That's when I knew it was time for a serious chicken coop upgrade, moving them from their cozy but cramped original CHICKEN COOP into something grander. Converting an existing structure, like a BARN or a shed, is a fantastic chicken shed idea because it often saves time and resources compared to building from scratch. It’s not just about space; a good chicken farm layout inside the barn is crucial for happy, healthy hens. When embarking on such an UPGRADE, consider these key elements: First, Space Requirements: While a small coop might have worked initially, an UPGRADE means thinking long-term. Aim for at least 3-4 square feet per bird inside the coop and 8-10 square feet per bird in an outdoor run. This prevents stress and pecking order issues. Next, Ventilation is Vital: Good airflow prevents ammonia buildup and respiratory problems. Windows, vents, and even a fan if necessary, are great, but ensure there are no direct drafts hitting your birds, especially during colder months. Predator Proofing is non-negotiable. Converting a BARN means checking for gaps, securing windows with hardware cloth (not just chicken wire!), and ensuring doors have strong latches. Straw or pine shavings make excellent, comfortable bedding. Don't forget about Feeders and Waterers. Keep them off the ground to reduce contamination and waste.
