Travelling the world through my taste buds 🌏 First Bites: Korean sotbap🇰🇷

📍 This week decided to finally try another highly rated Sagye, didn’t know what to expect… and honestly… pretty SOLIDDD and I get the hype now!!😋😋

Went around 6pm and got in within ~30 mins before the crowd came, quite lucky🙏🏻

👉🏻 Ordered:

Unagi sotbap

Beef short ribs sotbap

• Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup)

• Steamed egg + Free flow banchans

💭 First impressions/Thoughts:

Comforting, hearty and very satisfying! Made our tummy full and satisfied after the meal! Sotbap is definitely the highlight here😙👌🏻

👍🏻 Unagi sotbap:

Loved the five grain rice which added a nice texture (and personally I prefer such rice over white rice) and it paired really well with the seasoning and perilla flavour!

Unagi was nicely done, just wish it had a bit more char to it, then that would be perfect~

Ratings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.2/5

👍🏻 Beef short ribs sotbap:

This surpassed the Unagi sotbap because I was enjoying every single bite of it! The beef was surprisingly tender, well-marinated and easy to chew(kinda just melts in your mouth!)

Rice wasn’t soggy and absorbed the flavours nicely!

Ratings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

👍🏻 Yukgaejang:

Portion was HUGE (didn’t expect that 😳)

Packed with tender and lean beef, various vegetables and kimchi, tofu and gosh it was very worth it for the price! Don’t think about eating it alone or you can’t try other dishes HAHA

Ratings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

👍🏻 Steamed egg:

Simple yet comforting, it’s always nice to have alongside everything especially when visiting a Korean restaurant~

Ratings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

💫Overall:

Nothing much to complain about, just solid Korean comfort food done right! Would come back for the sotbaps and even the Yukgaejang! Oh yes, you get to add in their tea at the end with the remaining rice left in the claypot which then becomes like a porridge! Pretty interesting experience you should try but once again it’s a personal preference~

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.3/5

✨Disclaimer: this is solely my personal opinion based on my tastebuds, expectations and food experiences so don’t come at me! Do not quote me on anything because one man’s meat is another man’s poison✌🏻

Sagye Korean Pot Rice and BBQ Wheelock Place
5/29 Edited to

... Read moreTrying Korean sotbap for the first time at Sagye was an enlightening culinary experience that truly highlighted the depth and variety of Korean comfort food. The unique texture of the five-grain rice used in sotbap adds an earthy, nutty dimension that balances perfectly with the aromatic perilla leaves and the rich seasoning. Personally, I found the unagi sotbap to be a delightful choice, though more charring could elevate its smoky flavor. The beef short ribs sotbap stood out with its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and well-marinated flavor, which showed the chef's attention to detail. This dish proved how effectively the rice soaks up the flavorful juices, making every bite memorable. The generous portion of Yukgaejang was surprisingly filling and featured tender slices of lean beef combined with kimchi, tofu, and fresh vegetables, offering a spicy and hearty kick that's perfect on a cooler day. What I really appreciated was the free-flow banchans that accompanied the meal—these small side dishes added variety and complementary tastes that enhanced the overall dining experience. The simple steamed egg served as a smooth and savory palate cleanser, providing comfort between spicy and rich flavors. An interesting and unique finale was pouring tea over the remaining rice in the claypot to create a warm porridge, which was a novel way to end the meal and savor the last bits of flavor. Visiting Sagye around early evening before the crowd was a good strategy to enjoy a relaxed meal without long waits, which I recommend to anyone planning a similar visit. Overall, this meal made me appreciate the nuances of Korean homestyle cooking; the balance of textures, temperatures, and flavors creates a truly satisfying experience. For anyone looking to explore traditional Korean dishes beyond the usual barbecue or bibimbap, trying sotbap and Yukgaejang here is definitely worth it. It showcases why Korean comfort food has such a loyal following—offering nourishment and warmth in every bite.

This korean restaurant makes tofu from scratch !
Most Korean restaurants buy their tofu. This one makes it fresh in-house. 👀 We ordered their beef & pork tofu stews, bulgogi hot stone bibimbap, potato pancake, and hairtail fish — enough for 3–4 people and surprisingly affordable. 📍Wonderful Bapsang, Suntec 💰 Only about $20–30/pax
