“I cry even harder, thinking of how it could have been, of how I thought it would be. For the first time, I want to give up, to die, because suddenly everything is too much and there is no solution in sight.”
Newlyweds Grace and Jack Angel seem to lead a perfect life in British author Paris's gripping debut, but appearances can be deceiving.
The book is fast-paced, gripping, and chilling to the bone. There are thrills around every corner. It starts out beautifully, the author dropping subtle foreshadowing to what will come. Even with the foreshadowing, the realization drops on you like a ton of bricks and you’re left thinking, “Ah, so it’s like this instead of what I was originally thinking. That’s even worse.” Your heart will pound and your stomach will drop at every revelation and every twist.
Rating: 5/5 stars. Brilliantly executed. I think Paris may be my new favorite author. I’ve read almost all of her books at this point.
Spice Level: none
***TW (Possible spoilers, stop reading at this point if you don’t want that):

... Read moreWhen I first picked up B.A. Paris's 'Behind Closed Doors,' the book cover instantly grabbed my attention. That stark, almost minimalist design featuring a white door with a single, dark doorknob is just perfect for a psychological thriller. It perfectly conveys the chilling isolation and secrecy that Grace experiences. You can almost feel the weight of what's hidden behind that door, a visual metaphor for the 'perfect lie' she's forced to live.
The tagline, 'THE PERFECT MARRIAGE? OR THE PERFECT LIE?', is pure genius. Paired with the ominous door, it immediately hints at the dark secrets lurking beneath a seemingly idyllic surface. It makes you wonder: what really goes on when no one is watching? This visual hook is so effective; it's no wonder so many people are drawn to this particular thriller book cover when browsing for their next read. I remember staring at it, feeling a shiver down my spine even before reading the first page. It's a masterclass in how a simple design can speak volumes.
Beyond just the front, think about the overall presentation. The paperback version I read felt substantial, adding to the immersive experience. It's not just a cover; it's the gateway to a world of suspense. This book's popularity, evident from its staggering 3.98-star rating across over half a million reviews, speaks volumes not only about the story itself but also about the effectiveness of its branding, starting with that unforgettable cover.
I've seen a few different editions floating around, but for me, the original white door version remains the most iconic and true to the novel's spirit. Some international versions might opt for a more dramatic, illustrative style, but the simplicity of the original 'Behind Closed Doors' thriller cover manages to be far more unsettling. It doesn't give anything away, yet it promises everything a thriller fan could want: mystery, psychological depth, and a sense of impending dread.
It makes you truly appreciate the art of book cover design. For a book about appearances versus reality, having a cover that is deceptively simple, yet so deeply symbolic, is a stroke of brilliance. It's not just a decoration; it's an integral part of the reading experience, preparing you for the twists and turns that B.A. Paris so expertly delivers. If you're looking for a thriller where the cover itself tells a story, this one is an absolute must-see. It’s part of what makes this book such a talked-about phenomenon among bookworms.
