Plant some seeds! 🌱
My dad’s cats LOVE to munch on every plant they aren’t supposed to touch 😅🌿 — no matter how many times we tell them “no!” So I figured… why not give them something that’s actually meant for them? 🐱💚
I decided to start a little cat-friendly garden just for them, hoping it keeps their curious paws (and teeth!) off the other plants. Honestly, it turned into such a fun project, and I can’t wait to see their reactions once everything starts growing 🌱✨
If anyone has tips on how to keep cats out of houseplants — whether it’s tricks, sprays, setups, or distractions — PLEASE share them! I’m fully in my “learning as I go” era 😂👇
Items I used to start our mini kitty garden:
🪴 4.25” Pots
💡 25w Grow Light
🌱 Potting Soil
🌼 Miracle-Gro Plant Food (in my spray bottle)
🌼 Miracle-Gro All Purpose Plant Food
🎍 Bamboo Plant Labels
😺 Catnip Seeds
🌾 Cat Grass (Oat) Seeds
🌾 Cat Grass (Barley) Seeds
Hoping this little setup keeps the other plants safe and gives the cats something fun (and safe!) to snack on. Here’s to happy kitties and healthier houseplants! 💚🌿✨
Creating a cat-friendly garden is a wonderful way to satisfy your feline friend's curiosity while protecting your other houseplants. Cats are naturally attracted to certain plants like catnip and cat grass, which provide safe nibbling options and can help divert their attention from houseplants that might be harmful. When starting a mini garden for cats, it's important to choose the right seeds. Catnip heirloom seeds are well-known for their stimulating effect on cats, offering a playful, enjoyable experience. Additionally, cat grass varieties like oat and barley are excellent for digestion and provide a healthy chewing alternative. These grasses are easy to grow indoors and are safe for pets. Using 4.25” pots can help you manage your mini garden efficiently, making it easy to move plants as needed and maintain them with proper light and water. A 25-watt grow light simulates sunlight indoors, encouraging healthy growth especially in spaces with low natural light. Using potting soil specifically designed for indoor plants ensures your seeds have the nutrients they need. Feeding your plants with Miracle-Gro Plant Food or All Purpose Plant Food, applied through a spray bottle, supports healthier, greener growth. Incorporating bamboo plant labels helps you keep track of what’s planted and monitor your garden's progress effectively. Aside from providing designated plants for cats, keeping other houseplants safe may involve certain strategies such as using double-sided tape on pot rims, citrus-scented sprays, or physical barriers to deter cats. Placing distractions like toys or cat trees nearby can also reduce their interest in forbidden plants. Building a cat-friendly garden is not just about protecting your plants but also about enriching your pets’ environment and well-being. As cats engage with their garden, they receive mental stimulation and safe outlets for their natural chewing instincts. This approach turns plant care into a fun, shared activity between you and your feline companions, promoting a happier home for all.
