Moms: did you breastfeed? 🍼

My hot take: Breastfeeding isn’t magical... at first.✨

When they first laid my baby on my chest and he latched immediately after getting some breathing support, I thought it was a sign—this is it, we’ve got this. But spoiler alert: we didn’t.

What I didn’t know was that the ‘perfect latch’ was going to become an ongoing learning curve.

There were those peaceful, dreamy moments where everything felt in sync. But there were also middle-of-the-night feeds that felt like they’d never end. Cluster feeding? Oh, that’s fun, too. Watching your baby nurse for an hour, only for them to be hungry again 5 minutes later. And don’t even get me started on the DMER. No one warns you about that, but it’s real—and it’s hard.

The reality of breastfeeding? It's work. It takes time, patience, and yes, a lot of learning. I went in thinking it would be magical and easy, but in reality, we’ve had to figure it out together. I’m still learning. So, while breastfeeding is beautiful, it’s definitely not all sunshine and rainbows. But it’s ours.

Every day is progress. No one tells you that breastfeeding is a journey, not a destination. So if you’re struggling, you're not alone, and you’re doing amazing. You’ve got this, mama. 🍼✨

... Read moreBreastfeeding is often idealized as a magical bonding experience, but the reality involves many challenges and learning moments that new mothers rarely anticipate. The initial latch, though seemingly perfect, can lead to ongoing adjustments as both mother and baby learn to sync their feeding rhythms. Many mothers face cluster feeding, a pattern where the baby feeds for prolonged periods multiple times in a short span, which can be exhausting but is normal for newborn growth spurts. Another often overlooked difficulty is DMER (Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex), a condition causing emotional distress during milk letdown, which can be confusing and tough to handle without prior knowledge or support. Understanding this condition helps reduce anxiety and isolation. Breastfeeding is a journey with ups and downs rather than a destination reached quickly or effortlessly. The process requires patience, perseverance, and self-compassion. Support from partners, healthcare providers, and peer groups can make significant differences in mothers’ experiences. Practical tips include seeking lactation consultation, staying hydrated and nourished, embracing feeding schedules that work best for mother and child, and recognizing when support is needed. Ultimately, the beauty of breastfeeding is found in its uniqueness to each mother and child’s relationship, not in perfection. Progress should be celebrated, and struggles acknowledged as part of a natural, complex process. This mindset helps empower mothers to continue despite the challenges, knowing they are not alone and their efforts deeply matter to their child’s health and bonding.
