MOMS: did you breastfeed? 🍼

2024/5/17 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first became a mom, the pressure around 'breast is best' felt immense. Honestly, for me, it was a journey with its ups and downs, filled with incredible moments and unexpected challenges. I truly believe that what's 'best' is what works for you and your baby, ensuring everyone is fed, happy, and healthy. Every mother's feeding journey is unique, and there's no single right answer, whether you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or a combination of both. The most important thing is providing nourishment and love to your little one. For those of us on a breastfeeding path, there are so many practical aspects that aren't always discussed before baby arrives. One skill that truly saved me in those early days, especially when my baby wouldn't latch perfectly or I felt engorged, was hand expressing. It's not something everyone talks about, but it's incredibly useful, whether you're building a small milk stash, relieving discomfort, or just need a few drops of colostrum for your newborn. Here’s a quick guide to hand expressing that I found super helpful: Preparation is Key: Always start with clean hands and a sterile container to collect your milk. Finding a comfortable, private spot can help you relax and encourage milk flow. Some moms find it helps to look at a picture of their baby or have their baby nearby to stimulate a let-down. Gentle Massage: Begin by gently massaging your breast. Use your fingertips to make small, circular motions, moving from the outside of your breast towards the nipple. This helps awaken the milk ducts. Position Your Hand: Form a 'C' shape with your thumb above your nipple and your index finger below, about an inch or two back from the edge of your areola. You want to be behind the nipple but not too far back. Press Back: Press firmly back towards your chest wall. The goal is to compress the milk ducts located behind the nipple. Avoid pulling or sliding your fingers on the skin. Compress and Roll: Gently compress your thumb and finger together, then roll them forward towards the nipple to express the milk. Imagine you're squeezing toothpaste from a tube, but with a gentle, rhythmic motion. Release and Repeat: Release the pressure and repeat the compression and rolling motion. Rotate your hand around the breast to ensure you're expressing milk from different ducts. Patience and Practice: It might take a few tries to get the hang of it, and don't be discouraged if only a few drops come out at first. Consistency is key, and with practice, it becomes much easier! Beyond the mechanics, I've also learned that support makes all the difference. Whether it's from a lactation consultant, a partner, or other moms who've been there, having someone to talk to about challenges like latch issues, supply concerns, or simply the exhaustion, can be a lifesaver. Remember, you're doing an amazing job, no matter how you choose to feed your baby. Our journeys are all unique, and sharing our experiences helps us all feel a little less alone.

Fed is best! Luckily I have a very supportive support system and am able to breastfeed/exclusively nurse my son who will be 13 months tomorrow. But as someone who has pumped, nursed and tried it all I would just say if it doesn’t work out or isn’t what you want to do then don’t do it! You matter❤️

i chose formula, its the best decision for me due to mental health. if youre crying every time your baby is near you the baby will pick up on it. itll be miserable for everyone. i also wanted help with overnights and just everything in general without having to still spend the same time to pump.
