Upper-YA Dystopian Book Review

"Operation Oblivion" is the third and final book in The Roanoke Resistance Trilogy from @Mason Carlisle, Author , which is an upper-YA dystopian series. Without spoiling the entire trilogy, it takes place in a future dystopia where a fascist and tyrannical government has taken over the United States, and a group of cadets go AWOL, only to discover that their world, and their lives, and their government, are not at all what they were raised to believe. And they ignite a rebellion.

This was such a dark and heavy read—the entire trilogy is. Heavy trigger warnings for this. This book isn't on-page graphic, but it does not shy away from the realities and consequences of war, both physically and mentally. It's also extremely politically charged, as Carlisle wrote this in early 2024. Fans of war novels and dystopian novels that lean more into realism will find much to like here, as it portrays a hellish possible future. This book is bold and loud and dripping in grit and atmosphere. With plenty of quirky characters and a diverse cast, as well. I also really enjoyed how this wrapped up and the messaging Carlisle was leaving the reader with.

If there were only two small things I had while reading, is the ending denouement goes on for a while, it almost feels like it could have been a spinoff in its own right. It doesn't take away from the ending, but it reads like an epilogue spread over five chapters. The only other thing was that most of this book was very dialogue heavy, and the dialogue does most of the majority lifting here, when sometimes I wanted to sit in scenes without having characters state everything explicitly that was happening or they were feeling. But that is a stylistic choice, and very subjective to me as a reader. Carlisle writes very dialogue heavy books—I just wanted introspection and prose in more scenes.

Overall, a very intense and dark and, ultimately, satisfying and emotional ending to this trilogy. Recommended for fans.

... Read moreThe Roanoke Resistance Trilogy, penned by Mason Carlisle, immerses readers in a chilling vision of a future United States under fascist rule. In 'Operation Oblivion', readers witness the culmination of a rebellion led by young cadets who confront the grim nature of their reality. With heavy themes surrounding war, death, and torture, the book presents a stark portrayal of governmental oppression, making it a thought-provoking read. Fans of upper-YA dystopian literature can appreciate the political nuances woven throughout the narrative, as well as the rich characterizations that bring this gripping tale to life. The dialogue-driven style may polarize readers, yet it undeniably keeps the pacing brisk and engaging. This trilogy challenges readers to reflect on the implications of power and the underlying societal issues that resonate in today’s world. For those drawn to dark, intense stories that evoke deep emotional responses, 'Operation Oblivion' is a must-read, providing both closure and a lasting impression of its characters' struggles.
