Electrolytes for POTs

Salt

Let’s Talk about it✨

🌟I’ve tried 10+ brands of electrolytes, but here’s a few for now!

🤍LMNT

🌬️ Heavy but crisp salty taste. Sweetened with Stevia. Includes potassium and magnesium which are crucial for replenishing electrolytes. Raspberry is my favorite!

💭 Check out LMNT on instagram for recipes including drinks and food with their packets. Subscribe and you get a discount!

🧂1,000mg sodium

💲1.70 per packet

🤍Gatorade Zero

🌬️ Mildly salty and easier on the stomach. Zero sugar. I like all the flavors but white is my favorite!

💭I prefer these when my stomach is upset. High amounts of sodium can worsen GI discomfort.

🧂 160 mg

💲 00.35 per packet

🤍 Propel

🌬️ Similar to the Gatorade zero, but a tad saltier. They have a really wide range of flavors. Black Cherry is my favorite!

🧂220 mg

💲00.40 per packet

🤍Nuun

🌬️Not my cup of tea. Personally I think it tastes like Alka-Seltzer. Weirdly bubbly yet not quite carbonated, and very bitter.

🧂240

💲00.70 per tablet

🥼According to the Heart Rhythm Society Expert Consensus POTs patients need 5-12 grams of salt PER DAY. (Check with your doctor!)

That’s a lot!

And drinking salt alongside adding sodium to your everyday meal is very helpful.

✨I recommend switching up your electrolytes so you don’t get burnt out. And some electrolytes like LMNT can be added into recipes like salsa!

🤍I have a post linked for electrolyte gummies as well!

What other electrolytes should I try? Do you have a favorite?

... Read moreNavigating life with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) or other forms of dysautonomia often feels like a constant balancing act, and for me, electrolytes are at the heart of maintaining that balance. While I’ve shared my reviews of specific products like LMNT, Gatorade Zero, Propel, and Nuun, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why these mineral powerhouses are so crucial and how I’ve learned to optimize my hydration strategy. When you're searching for the 'best electrolyte supplements for POTS,' it's not just about grabbing the first drink you see. My personal journey has taught me that the trio of sodium, potassium, and magnesium is absolutely vital. Sodium helps increase blood volume, which is often low in POTS patients, directly impacting blood pressure and heart rate. Potassium works in synergy with sodium, and magnesium is essential for countless bodily functions, including nerve and muscle health, which can be significantly impacted by dysautonomia. I’ve found that checking the 'nutrition label' for these levels, especially for a consistent 'sodium potassium magnesium drink,' is key. The Heart Rhythm Society’s recommendation of 5-12 grams of salt per day for POTS patients might sound like a lot, but finding ways to incorporate it through both food and targeted electrolyte supplements makes a huge difference. Beyond the specific brands, I've learned to look for certain characteristics when choosing an electrolyte. For example, 'zero-sugar thirst quencher' options like Gatorade Zero are fantastic, especially because high sugar content can sometimes lead to blood sugar spikes and subsequent crashes, which can worsen POTS symptoms. Some 'sport hydration' drinks can be too high in sugar or artificial ingredients for daily use, so I always check. Taste is also a huge factor – if it tastes like Alka-Seltzer, as I found with Nuun, I'm not going to drink enough of it! I also consider how gentle a product is on my stomach; some highly concentrated options can cause GI upset, so I might opt for something milder during flare-ups. Cost per packet or tablet is another practical consideration, as staying hydrated with ample electrolytes can become an ongoing expense. While LMNT is a favorite, its price point makes me appreciate more affordable options like Propel for everyday use. I’ve also found that diversifying my electrolyte sources prevents 'burnout.' Switching between different brands and flavors, as well as incorporating electrolyte-rich foods, keeps things interesting and ensures I’m consistently getting what I need. Sometimes, I even get creative and add my LMNT packets into recipes, which was a game-changer for boosting my salt intake in a delicious way. Ultimately, finding your 'best' electrolyte strategy for POTS or dysautonomia is incredibly personal. What works for one person might not work for another. It's a journey of trial and error, paying close attention to how your body responds. Always, always, have a conversation with your doctor or medical team about your specific electrolyte needs and any supplements you plan to take. They can provide personalized guidance to ensure your hydration plan supports your overall health and helps manage your symptoms effectively.

with propel, I added a little extra salt to it as well and it brought out the taste (which was something I had struggled with because I could barely taste it)
