4 Days in Yogyakarta: What I Got Wrong 🇮🇩

I landed in Yogyakarta with Google Maps confidence and zero idea what I was actually walking into. 🗺️

Day 1: the market was dead. The restaurant had no sign it was closed. A guy came up and started speaking to me in Indonesian. I had no clue what he was saying.

Four days, three proper mistakes, one 3 AM alarm for Borobudur, and one very specific lesson about airport train entrances.

Here's what I'd do differently, and what was actually worth it.

📌 Save this before you book.

🛑 THE MISTAKES:

Taman Sari in the rain: Underground mosque was closed. Kopi luwak touts at every corner. Spent more time in traffic than looking at anything. Go on a dry day or skip it.

Malioboro for shopping: Same five batik scarves at tourist prices. Go to Pasar Beringharjo two minutes away instead. Three floors, local prices, actual locals.

Prambanan in the rain: Light drizzle reads fine. Then it doesn't. We wanted to push to Candi Sewu. We got soaked. One temple complex is enough for one day.

✅ THE WINS:

House of Ramiten (Day 1 dinner): The sweet jackfruit marinade had gotten into the egg in a way that made it taste like something. The ayam geprek was tender. Worth going back to.

Kurnia Seafood (Day 3): You pick your fish live, they cook it, flavours are excellent. A bit above average on price and worth every rupiah.

Borobudur sunrise access: Cloudy morning, no famous mist. You still get the temple at dawn, a guide in the dark, 15 people instead of a crowd. Worth the extra cost, much more so if you catch the sunrise.

The fixed-rate driver for Day 4: Suggested Pawon Temple when Google said it was closed. That tip was worth more than the hotel's breakfast. Drop a comment if you want his contact.

One critical note: the airport train at Yogyakarta station has a separate entrance that is not where you'd naturally walk. Ask your hotel before departure day. We nearly didn't make it.

... Read moreVisiting Yogyakarta is an incredible experience, but based on my trip, I learned that timing and local insight are crucial to making the most of your visit. For example, the weather can make or break your plans, especially when exploring historical sites like Taman Sari or the Prambanan temple complex. I recommend checking the forecast carefully and prioritizing sunny days for outdoor excursions, as the rain turned some visits into disappointments. One of the biggest surprises was discovering the local markets beyond the popular Malioboro street. Pasar Beringharjo is a hidden gem—offering authentic batik scarves at much better prices and, more importantly, a genuine local shopping experience. I found that venturing just a couple of minutes away from the tourist trail gave me access to real cultural encounters and better value. Food lovers should not miss dining at House of Ramiten where traditional Indonesian dishes like gudeg and ayam geprek are truly memorable. The blend of local flavors and thoughtful preparation stood out as one of the highlights of my trip. On Day 3, choosing Kurnia Seafood, where you select fresh fish that is then cooked to your liking, was worth every rupiah despite being a bit pricier. This approach to dining adds a dynamic and fresh taste experience. I also learned the value of guided early-morning tours, especially for Borobudur. Even on a cloudy day without the famous mist, the peaceful atmosphere of the temple at dawn combined with a small group tour offers an intimate and memorable experience far from daytime crowds. Another practical tip is to always double-check information from Google Maps or online sources — I mistakenly relied on listed closures which turned out to be inaccurate. Talking to locals or trusted guides can reveal spots like Pawon Temple being open despite online listings saying otherwise. Lastly, a detail that almost caused me to miss my departure was the unique arrangement of the airport train entrance in Yogyakarta Station which is not obvious. Confirming all transport arrangements with your hotel before departure can save you last-minute stress. Overall, Yogyakarta is a city of warmth, culture, and surprises whose full charm is best experienced with local tips and flexible planning. If you want an authentic, well-paced trip, consider including one temple complex per day, using local markets for shopping, and opting for guided morning visits for major sites.
