Part 1: Our baby’s first swimming experience 🏊‍♂️🥹

Last week, we brought our 9m+ baby to the newly renovated Hougang Swimming Complex for his first swim! 🏊‍♂️🥹

Since he has always loved playing with water in the bathtub, we were SO convinced he would love the pool.

We even brought along his tummy-time aquarium float, thinking he might have so much fun playing with it in the water.

Plot twist: we didn't even get to use it. 😂

When we arrived, my husband had already changed, so he brought our baby into the pool first while I went to change.

When I came back, my husband was already shaking his head at me:

“He seems scared…” 😂

And once I got into the pool, I understood why.

THE WATER WAS SO COLD to me. 🥶

My baby is normally used to warm water at home, so he probably wasn't used to the temperature.

We decided to give him some time to adjust, but he remained very quiet and tense, and kept clinging tightly to me.

Then I noticed his lips starting to look a little pale.

He didn't cry, even though he looked uncomfortable, so I actually thought:

“Wow, my baby is actually very brave!” 🥹

But seeing his lips turn slightly pale made us decide it was better to get him out of the pool. 🥶

My baby was so tense after getting out of the pool and didn't seem to want to go back in… he just kept clinging tightly to me. 🥺

Looking back, we wondered if these could have been the reasons he wasn't comfortable:

💧 The pool temperature

💧 Floating in water (Not being able to touch the ground)

💧 A completely new environment in a gigantic "bathtub"

We were expecting him to have fun straight away, but maybe he just needed more time. ❤️

💡 Practical tip for parents with babies:

We showered our baby at the wheelchair-accessible shower area outside the male/female toilets, so both my husband and I could go in together and shower/change him. It was much easier than trying to manage everything alone with a baby. ❤️

But then something surprising happened… 👀

We later tried a different pool, and his reaction was VERY different. 👀

Part 2 coming next! 🏊‍♂️

... Read moreTaking a baby to their first swimming experience can be quite an adventure, often filled with unexpected reactions. From my own experience, babies tend to be sensitive to water temperature changes — just like the cold water at Hougang Swimming Complex surprised this little one. It’s important to remember that babies are accustomed to the warm water of bathtubs at home, so introducing them to cooler pools needs gradual acclimatization. When my child first encountered a new pool environment, I noticed that the unfamiliar sounds, large space, and the inability to touch the ground caused some anxiety. Babies often rely on tactile cues to feel secure, so floating in deeper water without footing support can be intimidating. A good approach is to start in shallow pools or use baby-friendly flotation devices, but only once your baby is comfortable with the new sensations. The pale lips observed in the baby in the article highlight the need for close monitoring during swims. Cold exposure can cause discomfort or even health risks, so it's crucial for parents to watch for signs of distress and be quick to respond, as this family was by ending the swimming session early. A practical tip that resonated with me is the use of wheelchair-accessible shower areas. Having a space where both parents can assist with changing and showering significantly simplifies things, especially when handling a baby and swimming gear. Lastly, patience is key. Each baby has their own pace for adjusting to swimming. What might be overwhelming at first can become a joyful experience over time. Trying different pools or times can also help as environmental factors like temperature and crowd size differ. For parents planning their baby's first swim, I recommend preparing for a flexible plan, dressing warmly after the swim, and not rushing the process. Holding your baby close and speaking soothingly helps build their confidence and trust. This initial experience is just the beginning of many fun water adventures ahead.
